Karlie Kloss Poses Almost Nude In Controversial Allure Spread
19-year-old Karlie Kloss stars in a beauty feature shot by Mario Testino for the October issue of Allure, a fact that would be entirely unassuming if not for the fact that she’s almost entirely nude in most of the images.
The shots are what in industry parlance are called “implied nudes”, which is to say: she’s naked, but you don’t actually see anything. And they’re beautiful, sure, because it’s Karlie Kloss and Mario Testino and how could they not be? But there’s something about these images that feels a bit icky to us. Maybe it’s because we view and have always loved Karlie Kloss for her teen-from-St. Louis wholesomeness and, despite having just turned 19, we can’t help but remember that she went to her high school prom only than four months ago.
And we’re not the only ones feeling confused. The images have made the rounds with Fashionista describing their reaction as “uncomfy” and culminating with John over at Fashion Copious declaring, “No agent/agency should [any longer] allow their girls to be shot by Testino.”
All in, though, Fashionising probably said it best:
Kloss’ current commercial value lies in the fact that she is the classic beauty… Mario Testino’s implied-nude photo shoot with Karlie Kloss doesn’t play to that classic strength. There’s no allure to it and, frankly, it’s not that much better than what you’d expect to find in a whole range of low-brow men’s titles… Most any model can look hot in a photo shoot – Kloss has way more to offer than that.

John at Fashion Copious has clarified his statement above.
A few sites (Jezebel, Fashionista, Styleite) have taken my above comment to mean that I’m in disagreement with Karlie showing a bunch of skin. That’s not what I meant at all. What I meant was that Testino is a lazy photographer that lacks a point of view at this stage of his life. And hence am surprised that he’s being hired and paid handsomely for his [currently] shitty work. That’s the only things i’m outraged at. I could care less if Karlie poses nude; she’s 19 and can do whatever she wants.
