Could Kate Middleton’s Hypothetical First Daughter Be Queen?

Much as we like to think of Prince William and Kate Middleton as a modern couple, their marriage is governed by some very archaic rules. Specifically, if Kate Middleton were to have a daughter first and then a son, current British rules of succession dictate that the boy would skip ahead of the girl on his way to the throne.

Are you perturbed? Good. So is British Prime Minister David Cameron, who says he wants to change the rules so that whoever Kate gives birth to first will take the throne. The International Business Times got a copy of a letter Cameron wrote to the 15 Commonwealth nations led by Queen Elizabeth II, asking for their ideas on bringing the succession rules up to date. In it, he writes:

“We espouse gender equality in all other aspects of life and it is an anomaly that in the rules relating to the highest public office we continue to enshrine male superiority.”

For the time being, Buckingham Palace and all members of the Royal Family are keeping mum on the subject, saying that it is a goverment matter to decide who can be the next head of state. But that won’t stop you from telling us what you think, will it? Should the rules change so that Kates first born child will be the next ruler of the United Kingdom? Or does it matter, given that the crown doesn’t come with much real power at all?
