Kate Middleton Angers Masses With Coat That May Or May Not Be Missoni (UPDATED)

Kate Middleton can wear all the Zara she wants to when she’s off the clock, but for big official royal events, the Duchess of Cambridge normally sticks with British designers. Which is why a lot of people turned their heads and raised their eyebrows yesterday when Kate got out of the car wearing a coat dress the palace says is M Missoni.

It’s not quite the level of ire Michelle Obama inspired when she wore a dress by British house Alexander McQueen to a state dinner last year, but the powder blue knitwear coat dress, which has all the hallmarks of a Missoni design without looking like an colorful electroencephalogram, has set a lot of tongues wagging. Middleton put it on for a trip she took with Queen Elizabeth II and her stepmother-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to London’s Fortnum & Mason department store. The royals met with military personnel and toured the store’s restaurant, which has been renamed The Diamond Jubilee Tea Station in honor of the queen’s 60 years on the throne.

To be completely fair, it’s a really nice coat — but the people at Missoni don’t want to take credit for it. A spokesperson from the Italian fashion house told Grazia that neither they nor their diffusion line M Missoni created the coat. So if it’s not theirs, whose is it? Take a look at the photos below and see if you can help us figure it out.

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for M Missoni has just confirmed that they did make the coat and are delighted that Kate Middleton chose to wear it. So why did Missoni deny it made the coat? The spokeswoman told us that Missoni and M Missoni are separate and have completely different manufacturers, and believes “there was simply some confusion with the press this morning.”

Well, since no masses can be found in the UK that’re angered over Ms Middletons blue Missoni coat dress, your post is moot, Justin. On the contrary, Ms. Middletons outfit has gone over with the “masses” in the UK, quite well.

Methinks those angry masses you speak of, are all in your head.  As always, you’re a fail, when it comes to basic research.

    For your reading pleasure Justin.

From Grazia UK. One of the many UK online sites discussing Ms Middletons blue coatdress. And, guess what Justin?? They’re not angry!

The sun is shining, spring is in the air and what better way to kick off the month of March than with a dose of Middleton-ness? That’s right, Kate fans, the Duchess of Cambridge is in our fair capital bright and early this morning to visit Fortnum & Mason with her granny-in-law.
Yep, although she’s continuing her royal duties without William, Kate has the Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall by her side for today’s engagement. Arriving at the luxury store, the trio were greeted by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and we can look forward to Queenie unveiling a plaque to mark the renovation of Piccadilly.

So what is Kate wearing? Well, the Duchess looks as elegant as ever in a blue tweed dress coat with two yellow daffodils pinned to her lapel in honour of Saint David’s Day. Clarence House have
confirmed the single-breasted, collarless design comes from M Missoni, the Italian brand’s diffusion line. But rather than popping to the shops to buy a brand new ensemble, Kate has once again chosen a piece that is no longer on sale — in fact, it’s from the Autumn Winter 2010 collection. The outfit is completed by sheer nude tights and ladylike grey suede heels by Rupert Sanderson — the very same Malone pumps that we first saw at The Order Of The Garter service last summer.

And there’s more to come! On March 8th, Kate will join the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on a trip to Leicester that will launch the Royal jubilee tour. Until then, we want to hear what you think of the Duchess’ latest look..

One of your so called ”angry” responses from a Grazia reader, Justin..

“She looks lovely as ever but more importantly she looks happy” :)
