Kelly Wearstler Was Pretty Darn Excited For Kanye’s Samsung Concert
When we mentioned Kanye West to designer Kelly Wearstler at last night’s Samsung Galaxy Note II party, her eyes lit up and she enthused, “Yes! I love music, period. Kanye — I work out to Kanye a lot. He’s on my phone!” Wearstler wasn’t alone — hundreds of West-and Samsung-worshippers filled Skylight at train station-turned-event venue Moynihan Station in Midtown to play with fancy tablets and rock out to a highly anticipated concert.
The scene inside Skylight felt more like a tech conference than a fashion party — there were multiple booths where partygoers could play with the Galaxy Note II’s different features, and it was easily the least fashion-y event we’ve ever been to. There were men in suits!
In one corner of the venue, Wearstler gave us a tutorial on how to make an inspiration board on the tablet. Of course, as a ready-to-wear, accessories, and interior designer, Wearstler’s board included a lot of jewelry and bright colors. Wearstler pulled pictures and made notes on the tablet like a pro, and called it her “partner-in-crime.” With so many different lines to design, Wearstler revealed that she’s constantly inspired and uses her tablet to simplify everything.
“Everything inspires me! Really, it’s how you look at things, and being aware of your surroundings. From nature to fashion, sculpture, and art. Interiors are feeding the fashion, and now, fashion’s inspiring the interiors.”
Despite her advice, we found it hard to drum up a cool inspiration board ourselves, so we moseyed on out of the booth and headed over to another area inside Skylight where Kanye would perform. We waited and waited until security guards finally said “Open sesame,” and allowed us inside the room. Once we got as close to the stage as we could (which was pretty darn close), we waited yet again, and for a good half hour, we witnessed several heated arguments and made friends with fellow fashionistas before Yeezy finally came on stage around midnight.
The wait was well worth it, and we were treated to an amped up and sweaty hour-long set of old and new tunes, a couple of
rants monologues about living in Japan and working at Fendi in Rome, and a surprise cameo by 2 Chainz. See, we told you this was the most unfashion-y party we’ve been to!
