In Which Kenneth Cole Tries To Capitalize On Chaos In Cairo

Apparently Kenneth Cole knows there’s nothing like a violent political revolution to boost sales! Which is the only way to explain why he chose to link the crisis in Egypt on his brand’s new spring collection.

Earlier this morning, the designer tweeted:

Followed about an hour and a half later by:

Which is to say: he must have realized pretty quickly how controversial his initial tweet would be. While we obviously find the joke — or whatever Mr. Cole wants to call it — in incredibly poor taste, we’re stunned that it came from the man whose own brand is dedicated to social activism and awearness — his word, not ours. And in case you thought maybe the tweet came from some disgruntled underling, take a look at his bio, which reads: “Thoughts that end in -KC are from me personally; others are behind the seams insights from my inspiring associates.”

UPDATE: Some enterprising individual has already set up the parody Twitter account KennethColePR. Some sample quips:

People of Haiti, fall into our store for earth-shattering savings! #KennethColeTweets

Our new looks are dropping faster than the World Trade Center #KennethColeTweets

…and you get the gist.

I was tweeting with a friend of mine about the KC tweets as this was all happening, and we both agreed, we understand the want to use humor in a time of hardship, but this tweet was in very bad taste. It isn’t a matter of it being too fresh, but of the situation being on-going and very, very serious. Plus, it wasn’t even funny.

I really don’t think it’s about humor, again some in the fashion community can’t see beyond the almighty dollar and will do anything to draw attention to their brand. To all the fashion icons – try living in the real world for a change.

He made the same mistake in the past referring to 9/11. We’re used to it!
