PHOTOS: The Many Hats Of The Kentucky Derby

Since we don’t do the whole Royal Wedding here in the states, the next best bet for fancy women’s millinery is the Kentucky Derby, the horse race at which every lady in attendance is expected to wear som seriously extravagant headgear. But in the aftermath of all the hats on display at Westminster Abbey a week ago, the question on the mind of every hat-loving lady in the United States was, “Will the Derby live up to that?”

The answer? Yeah, kinda! Lots of the women who went to Churchill Downs yesterday stepped up their hat game and didn’t dissappoint. Below, a few of the hats we saw and loved. And when you’re done with those, take a look at SportsGrid‘s take on the hats at the derby.

Its funny to me because as an African American, if you grew up in the black baptist church , or a black church period like I did, you are Very use to seeing this. The women were hats like this every sunday. It’s been done before my time and even before my grandma time. I think this is what the African American Church Woman adapted to especially once freed.
