Why Kim Kardashian Is So Upset About Her Turkish Cosmo Cover

Kim Kardashian‘s magazine covers are going to cause drama no matter where they are, but we never anticipated the firestorm of near-political controversy surrounding her latest glossy front. Kardashian, who’s never been shy about her Armenian heritage, shot a few photos for the international editions of Cosmopolitan, and one of them ended up on the cover of Turkish Cosmo. And if you remember your high school world history class, Turkey is responsible for the 20th century’s first genocide — against the Armenians.

Naturally, Kardashian is said to be highly upset that her image was used on the cover of a Turkish magazine. TMZ reports that while she and her representatives knew that her image would be used for several of the international editions, Cosmopolitan never mentioned that it would be on the Turkish edition, and especially not this month. Kardashian’s image runs on the cover of the first Armenian edition of the magazine and in a handful of other countries.

Kardashain seems to be taking the slight in stride. She wrote a post on her blog saying she regrets that she’s on the April cover, but that she hopes this will be one of those teachable moments:

I have an amazing relationship with Cosmopolitan Magazine. World-over, Cosmo is known as a fun and inspiring magazine for women of all races, shapes, sizes, regardless of their political beliefs and I really hope that if I can bring awareness to the issue, then this in an accomplishment.

But if Kardashian is taking it in stride, the Armenian National Committee of America is not. The organization’s president Aram Hamparian expressed some extreme disdain for the cover.

“It’s disrespectful to Kim Kardashian and to all Armenians for the publishers of Cosmopolitan to use her image, without her permission, on the month we mark Turkey’s genocide against the Armenian people.”

We’ll have to suppose that whatever release forms Kardashian signed means that she did give the magazine permission to use her image, even if she and her lawyers didn’t realize it. Maybe the magazine was offering some kind of weird olive branch to Kardashian and the Armenian people. Maybe its editors knew that putting her on an April cover would mean the magazine would get lots of attention. But regardless of why they chose to put her on this cover, the decision was still pretty insensitive.

I am part Armenian and I am completely in agreement that the image should not have been used without permission, even if she had signed a release for the images to be used for international Cosmo. The issue is so sensitive that Cosmo (supposedly run by and for intelligent women), should have taken into consideration the ramifications of their actions, especially since the month marks a significant time in Armenian history, even for those who are generations removed like myself. If proper permission had been obtained then it is still acceptable, however still in bad taste. I did like Kim’s attitude, she is being very diplomatic and it is good to see that she can bring an issue such as this to the fore.

this is sooooooooooo stupid , fashion is like art a neutral place where politics does not influence. This is saying no jews can be on the cover of a German fashion magazine because of what happened ? please. Look at what the Americans did to Africans or native Americans , this is much to do about nothing . Kim needs to apologize to the Turkish people and stop her ethnocentric ways. She is a disgrace. Why not build bridges instead of destroying them. The people of turkey are not responsible for what happened long time ago. It is like blaming the Libyan people for the evils that Kadafi does . It is unfair . There are so many ways Racist Kardashian could have handled this .

jim, for the turks art is all about murder, atrocity, genocide, turks use the pic to show the world that they are peace loving people and tolerate everyone. the truth is, the turks still today kill everyone who would dare to use the word genocide. in fact, they massacre the the kurds and all the other minorities who refused to be call a turk. if art has no place in politics, why do the turkis government destroyes all the churches that were built by the armenians?

Fashion is not neutral in the list and can be very heavily politically motivated. Consider the fashions deemed acceptable by many Middle-Eastern countries and religions, the veils and full body sheathes women are required by their religion to wear. Consider how many people were upset that the French president’s wife had posed nude because they felt someone in her position, even if she has no real political power, shouldn’t be seen in anything but the most demure means possible. Consider how all it takes is a woman in a short skirt and thank top for her to be deemed a “whore”, how even military fashion in any given country will change not only to suit the needs of the soldier on the ground, but to convey as much modern power as possible to whoever their perceived enemy might be. Fashion is politics, as much as art has been politics for eons. I have seen nothing from Kardashian or her camp to suggest she is racist and to suggest she is for wishing that more discretion was used in the decision by Cosmo to feature a very high-profile Armenian woman on a Turkish cover is somehow racist? Is racist not on her part, but yours. You assume that simply because she’s Armenian and upset about this, she’s somehow speaking against Turkey. She’s not. She’s raising awareness of a very criticial and awful time in both Armenian and Turkish history that has a very real effect on both sides, she’s pointing out the folly in Cosmo’s choice to do this in April, when the anniversary of the genocide takes place. That’s not racism, that’s a basic humanitarian cause and she’s handling it incredibly gracefully without offering words of hatred for Turkey, or for anyone. All she’s done is ask that her people be respected and that her image be used in a way that’s meaningful, rather than tawdry and clearly a means to gain attention for the magazine.

Fashion and art DO have a lot to do with politics. I am glad she’s speaking up and hope her influence can be used to bring light to these issues! I love Kim no matter what people say about her. I’m glad she’s a non-traditional [white] public figure! We have tons of stuff on Kimmy in our blog http://www.miaandmaki.com
