Vera Wang’s Kardashian Wedding Collection Doesn’t Hit Stores Until Next Year

People are seriously freaking out about Kim Kardashian divorcing Kris Humphries, but there is really only one person who should be worried. That person is Vera Wang.

As you’re probably aware, Wang designed three dresses for Kim’s special (?) day. She also decided to make “affordable versions” of two of them for her White by Vera Wang for David’s Bridal line. However, the $1,500 gowns won’t hit stores until February, at which point Kim and Kris will have been separated for longer than they were married. Yikes.

We have to imagine Wang is pissed. We’re not sure what the details of the negotiations were, but we assumed either Kim would get a cut of the profit or that the knockoffs were part of a deal that allowed Kim to get her dresses for free. Regardless, Wang clearly got involved because she thought all the Kim and Kris kraziness would translate into a ton of sales. This split means the designer could actually lose money on this endeavor.

Ultimately it comes down to this: will Kim fans still buy the dresses? Or will they be wary of the DIVORCE CURSE?

Vera Wang is one of the few people with a stronger brand than the Kardashians. What will the backlash be for Vera? Not too much. The Vera Wang brand is strong. The designer is not just a designer but she’s also a serious business woman, turning her bridal designs into an empire that includes custom wedding gowns, licensing deals and also a seriously fashion-forward RTW line that shows during Fashion Week. Worst case scenario, the Kim-inspired collection won’t be a big seller. However, in terms of Vera’s namesake collection, she is likely in the clear. Wang is known for her wedding gowns and leads the industry. For instance, she showed black wedding gowns at bridal Fashion Week last month and its been on the lips of industry insiders and competitor companies alike. Its as if Vera can do no wrong. http://www.fashion-law.org
