WATCH: Lady Gaga’s Ethereal Viva Glam Commercial
It’s really interesting the way Lady Gaga can be hard and sort of intensely dark and scary one second and talcum soft the next. Her first commercial for MAC‘s Viva Glam campaign, like the print ad, features Gaga as a supremely washed out being in a room made of flowing blush-tone fabrics, putting her makeup on in a oval mirror. And it’s gorgeous.
Don’t worry, though. This isn’t just a simple commercial — there’s tons of symbolism, too. The mirror, which may or may not signify the egg she hatched from at the Grammys, is surrounded by what looks like a single cabbage rose, a full martini glass, a bottle of perfume and two crystal-covered skulls by artist Damien Hirst. Or perhaps they’re by artist John LeKay? Highly conceptual? Esoteric, much? You bet.
