Hindu Deity-Printed Swimsuit Pisses A Whole Lot Of People Off

When Lisa Burke sent a one-piece printed with an image of HIndu goddess Lakshmi down the Lisa Blue Swimwear runway at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, she had no clue that an enormous backlash would follow.

Activists were outraged that an image of the deity — who represents wealth, wisdom, and beauty, among other things — was used for such a purpose. Hindu statesmen Rajan Zed explained: “Lakshmi was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not for pushing swimwear in fashion shows for mercantile greed of an apparel company.” Some people were so upset about the offending swimsuit that they burned an Australian flag in Amritsar, India.

Burke yielded to the protestors’ demands, promising the designs would never be produced or sold:

The image of Goddess Lakshmi will not appear on any piece of Lisa Blue swimwear for the new season, with a halt put on all production of the new range and pieces shown on the runway from last week removed/ The use of images of Goddess Lakshmi was not in any way a measure of calculated risk taking, simply it was a desire to celebrate different cultures and share that through our brand.

This range will never be available for sale in any stockists or retail outlets anywhere in the world. We apologise to the Hindu community and take this matter very seriously.

We’ve included pictures of the swimsuit below. What do you think of the controversy?

But you have to admit, it’s pretty great. I would buy it.

  • Bta_fr

I have seen the images of thse gods and goddesses pasted on much worse places, than on a swimsuit, in India!

  • Kathy K

I think she’s making a mistake giving in to the protesters demands. It’s pretty and I’d buy it.

  • Gregmkay

Why should Aussies give a rat’s rear-end what a group of religious radicals in a foreign country think?

  • Ielts23

    hello

do not comment in wrong way

  • Ielts23

gregmkay u r an idiot on earth not in australia , do u know this foreign country has lifted australian economy

  • G-Man

We as a society can’t survive if we stop giving a rats a$$ about how other are effected by your actions. It looks beautiful; I have to give the designers at Lisa Blue big thumbs up for that and it also looks very flattering on the gorgeous model. In this scenario, I guess it’s more about doing the right thing and being sensitive about what others (in this case 890 million Hindus) think. You can never keep everyone happy FACT but that’s when you calculate the % of people you would enrage by your actions. What I still find very careless and naive is, how could they use an image of Laxmi, without doing their research first, without understanding the repercussions of celebrating a culture they don’t really understand? They have got publicity out of this, good or bad, and people who can see beyond the culture difference (potential buyers in this case) were excited by the designs but it is upsetting others and this is what we need to understand. The apology however seems very heartfelt and if it was all just business, and no harm was intended, I’m sure the talented designers at Lisa Blue will come up with another commercial idea and hopefully this time without attracting any unwanted attention.

Ps :Yes I’m a Hindu, an open minded and a non violent one. The way all religions want you to be.

As an atheist from a Hindu background living in India, I don’t think this is any big deal. The idiots who are creating a fuss are some lunatic fringe groups. They display Gods on all sorts of places; why not on swimsuits? I hope the authorities in India do not take these characters seriously.

They are not showing the images here that were printed on the ass of the model’s swimsuit.- definitely not subtle. No one is forced to do so, but for Lisa Blue to show their respect for the the religion of other people, by not issuing this line shows not only good business instincts, but that they are respectful to the cultures of other peoples. Their are plenty of interesting images available in the world to print on garments without insulting the sensibilities large groups of people.

  • sam

The women must not have been allowed, or rather uninterested to protest this. . lots of angry men in the streets in the pic.

  • Rockyluvs

I would definitely Print JESUS CHRIST Pic on my undies…and on my ass …… .. fuck off these people…

  • Rockyluvs2

print your religion god on ur swimsuit for better insult … u moron

  • A.A

I would love a cross on my underwear too….

  • Roguewave

The article fails to mention that she is also a goddess of fertility. Where better to display that attribute than on a form fitting swim suit?

  • Chcdelhiapplicant

There are temples of Hindu Gods making love in all sorts of postures in Khajuraho in India.

  • Arnab

One has to do proper background research before “exploring other cultures”. Even as an atheist, I am appalled at the design. It is akin to using images of Buddha or Jesus to cover someone’s nipples, ass, and crotch.

  • Don

    Uh, what’s the model’s name?

  • Thoth H.

What a storm in a tea-cup! There are nut-job fanatics adhering to every religion I guess. In this case volatile Hindus. I know enough about religion(s) to see that this is hype. I am looking at a business card from an Indian store round the corner from me that blatantly displays the image of Lakshmi: I have it above my office desk to bring good fortune! I notice that Hindus plaster images of their deities where ever they wish, so I smell a strong whiff of hypocrisy here. Oh, BTW, Arnab, I have seen countless tee-shirts displaying Buddha, Jesus, Ganesha, Hanuman, Odin, Thor, Jupiter, ad infintum worn by well-meaning individuals. Get a grip!

  • Nishadfx

you can lie to others.but not to yourself

  • Nishadfx

unfortunately its not there for sale babe……..probably you can buy the one with jesus christ on the back

  • Nishadfx

because you aussies are such an idiots

  • Nishadfx

i think your brain works from Mooladhara chakra you assole

  • Nishadfx

wow you are so intelligent ………great you an intelligent aussie

  • Nishadfx

    !@#$%^$model’s name is Desperado

  • Nishadfx

if u have to do it do it.don’t talk

  • INdian

my dear its not about religious radicals……….but its about the culture and the God we worship. Would you prefer wearing your God’s photo on an underwear and go on a beach or a sex ride?

  • Klubbhead

Seriousely. It looks great. Gods are all around us at all times, which inculudes when we are in our out of our swimwear. If its on a suit. Rejoice. Advertises the religion for free, and more people might wonder who the goddess is & convert or join.

Why care whether its on a swimsuit or underwear. If Jesus was on mine I’d still wear it loud and proud. Bless my bottom :)

  • Pint0

Erhm. Includes is the word. Typo. Do note. I do respect peoples religions. But not every single hindu is offended by this. Its debatable. Ask a few spirirual leaders for their opinions, and go from there.

  • An Australian

Nishadfx – You have made your position on the photos abundantly clear. However, it would be preferable if you could do it without insulting a nation of people, some of whom are sensitive to the cultural and religious beliefs of others. It might also be preferable if you could put your opinions across without using base and foul language.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=723521481 Jyoti Gurung

Are ppl running out of things to print on a swim wear? I mean this is indeed offending..nt tht im a hindu..but we sud and must respect the sentiments of all the people who worship the Goddess. Duh!! People and their ideas!

  • Britinmumbai

    I would

  • an honest Indian

the same print on a T-shirt, surely, would have raised no eyebrows……….. but, for us Indians, even a one-piece swimsuit is pornography………… i guess that’s where the problem lies………….

  • Sandeep kamble

Yes I’m a Hindu, an open minded and a non violent one. The way all religions want you to be.

  • Jack

assholes out there having the image on a swimwear, have jesus’s pic on a thong and run on the ramp !

  • champa

Fashion is a celebration of human creativity and an expression of one’s beliefs and identity. There is nothing cheap and sexual about it. I understand this is your religion, but how can it be seen so negatively for others to want to present themselves with this image? Is it not merely spreading the great beauty and feminine energy that flows from such a powerful image? If Lakshmi represents these things why can a woman, the embodiment of this energy not be allowed to decorate herself in such a way?

  • guest

I think the point that everyone is missing here is that this image may not have been chosen for economic gain or publicity.. did you ever consider that it could be a celebration of all that Goddess Lakshmi embodies?

  • G-Man

    Yes
i did …. and thats probably why i fell in love with it .. i looked at
it as a celebration of Hindu culture, freedom of expression and taking
that next step in creativity. But sadly not everyone’s with me on this,
and i completely understand that having lived in India for 7 years …
And thats why i said earlier, you cant celebrate a culture without
completely understanding the complexcities (and they are huge in this
case btw)….. How about ppl just let the design/designer be and see how
well this collection does … ? They are not forcing anyone to buy this
… are they ? but i guess we will never find that out and this makes
    me sad.

  • Gauravsolanki

its by mistake sorry for that from my side.
