WATCH: Lea T Dishes On Being Givenchy’s Transsexual Muse
We’ve known this for a while, but Lea T‘s interview with Models.com confirms it: she’s really, really awesome. We can’t wait for the transgender model‘s appearance on Oprah, and Lea’s most recent interview gives some amazing insight into her life.
She talks about how hard it is to be a transgender woman in Italy, where people openly taunt her on the street, in contrast to the more accepting attitudes she’s encountered in the U.S. and in her native Brazil. When Riccardo Tisci tapped her for the Givenchy fall 2010 ad campaign, his intention wasn’t to shock — he just thought it would be nice to include his old friend Lea. And when he asked her how he should identify her when discussing the ads, she said: “The first thing I want you to say is that I am a transsexual. That’s the most important thing.” Why? Because she wants to serve as a role model to other transgender people.
Lea also dishes on her naked French Vogue photos. She says Carine Roitfeld encouraged her to pose nude, saying: “Why not be naked like the other girls? You have a penis, but that’s what you are. For me, you are beautiful like the other girls.” That makes us miss Carine already.
Suffice to say, you really need to watch the entire interview below.
