When Will Stores Stop With The Offensive ‘Girls Can’t Do Math’ Bit?

Did you know girls are, like, really bad at math? Because they totally are! And it’s soooo funny LOLOL, but it’s okay because they can buy clothes instead!

Ugh. Today a friend sent us a link to a shirt she wanted to buy that she came across via today’s Best Bet post on The Cut. “It’s cute!” we Gchatted back. “But did you read the product description?” Oh, man. This is what the blurb on Life:Curated‘s e-commerce site says:

Just because you failed 11th grade math class doesn’t mean you can’t bring some geometry into your life with this Tetris print blouse.

Really? REALLY?! Did we learn nothing from Forever 21 (or JCPenney)? For the record, we’re placing the blame solely on Life:Curated and not the brand (which is The Addison Story, by the way) nor The Cut (whose description says nothing about math). But Life:Curated, you might want to switch up your product copy.

listen. i’m a successful nyc girl. i can do math. i think their blurb is funny. lets not lose our sense of humor …seems a bit anti feminist to do so…just saying.

I’m really sick of these “where’s your sense of humour” comments on the past three articles about these “girls can’t do math” clothes that keep popping up.  If this were a piece of clothing on a “African American” fashion page for men – implying that black people were bad at math — people wouldn’t be so freakin quick to comment.

I’ve had to work twice as hard in my science field to be taken seriously as a female and have been told many times to “have a sense of humour” about things when people make jokes about me wearing makeup or “when I am going to go away and have babies”.  WTF?  Some women can’t do math, fine.  And some men can’t.  But men are embarrassed if they can’t and don’t make clothing or advertising bragging about it – and women shouldn’t feel like any academic foible is a badge of honour.  Would you buy a shirt if the blurb read:

“Just because you have a terrible fashion sense and don’t know you’re Blahnik from your Louboutins, doesn’t you can’t enjoy this shirt emblazoned with fancy footwear!”

    Jeez.

Here’s a page of men’s T-shirts about Math.  Note how they are all about how amazing men are at math.  Then look at the one t shirt at the bottom for women (in a women’s fit).  It’s pink and says “Cutie Pie” spelled out QT(Pi).  Not terrible, but why can’t women be amazing at math and not just “cutie pies”??? ARGH

Wait, $112 for a short-sleeved blouse? Was it worn by Madonna or something?

I’m a man, and I don’t think criticizing this shirt is a form of “bad feminism.” We are right to point out instances of patriarchal thinking about women, their choices, and their abilities. These shirts are not isolated instances, but rather reflect a society, and world, that devalues women, and their capabilities.
