Lord & Taylor’s Fifth Avenue Flagship Will Be Open Thanksgiving Day
Because apparently not even family holidays are sacred anymore, department store Lord & Taylor has decided to one-up the competition by keeping its Fifth Avenue flagship open on Thanksgiving Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
It’s tradition for stores to close on Thanksgiving Day to allow employees to watch the parade and spend time with their families. All the other Manhattan flagships, like Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales, have chosen to close for the holiday, but this could entice them to change their plans and have some extended hours. However, a source at Macy’s told WWD, ”we wouldn’t do that to our employees”, and we wouldn’t be surprised if other retailers felt the same.
Many of the Lord & Taylor employees WWD spoke to didn’t seem too thrilled with the idea of working when they could be gorging themselves on turkey and pie. And who could blame them? We wouldn’t be happy, either. In our opinion, this is pretty ridiculous. The vast majority of people aren’t going to be rushing out to buy things at department stores on Thanksgiving because they, too, will be celebrating with their families, so why make employees show up to work? Shopping till you drop is what Black Friday is for, so until then, give it a rest.
