PHOTOS: Louis Vuitton Unveils Its Spotty Collab With Yayoi Kusama
Louis Vuitton‘s artist collaborations have a history of becoming cult classics. Remember the rainbow-colored Murakami bags that every teenage girl wanted in the early 2000s, and Stephen Sprouse‘s graffiti-print creations that wound up under the arm of every celebrity? Well, LV just unveiled its newest collab with pop artist Yayoi Kusama. After a fancy reveal at Vuitton’s NYC flagship yesterday, brand big wigs, celebrities, and Kusama herself adjourned to the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan to celebrate.
First off, the red carpet. Overall this wasn’t the best showing. Martha Stewart was definitely worst dressed in what was essentially a dingy pillowcase. Dianna Agron‘s dress had a lot of potential, but the wrinkling of the skirt undermined the whole thing. Sofia Coppola wore a very pretty black dress with a feather skirt that we’ve seen a million times, and Kaya Scodelario‘s grey bubble-hem frock didn’t really do her any favors. The night’s winners were definitely Lauren Santo Domingo and Harley Viera Newton, who both looked playfully adorable in — three guesses! — Louis Vuitton.
Moving on to the collection itself! This is by far our favorite Louis Vuitton artist collaboration. The last two, with their candy colors and overly obvious logos, were cheesy at worst and overly trendy at best. But this one includes several pieces that are worth the price tag of a classic and could be worn for years to come (i.e. every pair of pumps in the collection), and others that are just downright cool. We think the white sunglasses are perfect for Iris Apfel, and the peter pan collar necklace is to die for. It’s like Minnie Mouse‘s fantasy designer accessories closet come to life!
And finally, like with any collection worth it’s salt, there’s a video to accompany the collaboration. It’s delightfully irreverent, and, dare we say, funny. Check out models doing goofy dances in polka dot body paint!
The red carpet and the collection are in the slideshow below, along with some images of looks from the collab that we dug up. Enjoy!
