WATCH: What The Eyewear Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know

Last night, CBS60 Minutes investigated a “little-known but very big Italian company” called Luxottica, a name that you may never have heard before but from which you have almost certainly bought a pair of glasses.

You see, Luxottica is the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer, producing frames for everyone from Prada to Chanel to Ralph Lauren, to the tune of 65 million pairs in 2011 alone. In the segment, reporter Lesley Stahl interviews CEO Andrea Guerra, who estimates that there are half a billion people wearing glasses manufactured by his company at a time.

Other tidbits you may not have known? Luxottica also owns Ray-Ban, which they “refurbished” from a $29/pair gas station brand into the top-selling sunglasses name in the world. And not only that — they own LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Oliver Peoples, Target optical, Sears optical, and several boutique chains. PLUS EyeMed, the country’s second-largest vision care plan. Guerra contends that there are “lots of things” his company doesn’t own, but as glasses-wearers ourselves, we’re starting get the unsettling feeling that they pretty much own us.

That being said, we do think Stahl pulls off last Spring’s swirly Prada frames with aplomb. Watch the clip for yourself below, and let us know if you’re planning on hightailing it to lower-priced e-tailer Warby Parker next time you’re in need of some specs, or if you dont mind shilling out more for the big name brands:

Now I know why I can’t get great looking $30 alt-fashion “Bo Long” sunglasses anywhere. If they’re not made by Luxottica then as far as SunglassHut or LensCrafters are concerned they don’t exist. You can fly to China and buy sunglasses cheaper than you can buy them in the States. Why? Because 60Minutes seems to be the only anti-trust investigator left in the USA.

  • Kelly

I used to purchase my glasses from Lenscrafters, my glasses never lasted me more than a year. I just recently found out about this other company the-seen-eyewear.com, they are an American owned company, they have an amazing selection, at prices you can’t beat!!!

I was shocked at how many glasses are made by Luxottica. I recently got a pair of designer acetate glasses from Benji Frank and was happy to learn after seeing this 60 Minutes segment that they are American owned and operated. My new pair cost just $100, which included rx lenses, anti-scratch & anti-reflection coatings. Plus, they give back to charity with every purchase. Surprised Leslie didn’t mention them.

  • Raymond Banner

They should do a story on how Lux treats its employees in the US..That would be an eye opener. Ha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/beverly.muncycahill Beverly Muncy Cahill

Seriously. This would REALLY be a story.

I do not work for Luxotica, but I work for a retail optical chain and we have some of the Luxotica products and I just want to say, Gee thanks, 60 minutes, for making my job just a little harder and a little crappier. I had no less than 3 customers come in today just to read me the riot act about how we are a bunch of scammers trying to pass off low quality frames as higher quality. This was in reference to Ray Ban. I don’t make the stuff. I just sell it. But it was loads of fun to be accused of trying to steal peoples money. Thanks so very much. P.S. I hope your job sucks as much as mine.

  • savesgh

I myself do work for a Lux brand that was mentioned but has no defense. And I had people walk into my store just to tell me we are crooks and took jobs away from American people. I, an American person, may potentially lose my livelihood thanks to the one sided attack on Luxottica. All I can say is I’ll give you $30 dollars and what I expect in return, the high quality, produce I make a living selling. And I want it with a smile, outstanding selection, to fit my face and last a lifetime. This interview was very unfair and biased

Same here! I work at VisionWorks, Luxottica’s competitor, and I STILL had people complaining to me, telling me I should be ashamed to work there, blah, blah, blah. Why don’t you do a special on an Optometrist shop, they charge WAY more than any Luxottica chain. I used to work at LensCrafters and people were happy to pay $300 for a pair of glasses that would cost them around $700 at their doctor’s office.

  • Sharon Lumetta

I take issue with Luxottica’s comment regarding Ray Ban having been a $29.00 gas staion brand before THEY ate the company. That was never true until Luxottica bought Ray Ban and so many others. I have been an optician for 40 years and I have never seen a company under cut the quality of previously reputable fine eyewear lines the way Luxottica has. They have turned what was once an honorable profession into a joke. In our office we make a point of not carrying any of their products, it’s like feeding a monster whose goal is to swollow you whole.

  • Justin Case

yeah i work at lenscrafters, they treat me like poop!

  • julez589

i myself work at lenscrafters and customers complain all the time about how expensive glasses are…i mean why even bother coming to see us if you know how much our products are?? go buy them online for $20 and then come back to me a few weeks later after they are broken or damaged. I pride myself in giving excellent customer service and I enjoy helping people pick frames that will make them look fabulous but there’s a price tag for that so its up to you if you’re willing to pay the price! don’t ask me why this frame is $300, i just sell you the glasses, I dont set prices!

  • Mick Ware

that is not true and u know it. I buy my glasses from my doctor’s office and i don’t pay a mortgage for them like lenscrafters or visionworks charges. Why would anyone buy glasses from these optical chains beats me….thank u, 60 minutes!

  • Anonymous

I work for an eyeglass frame manufacture that has been making glasses for
    105 years.

Our frames cost about the same as a pair of Prada or Chanel. (maybe a little
    less)

If you are going to pay top dollar for a pair of glasses you should get the
    BEST quality.

You will NOT get that from Luxottica.

Our company is all about quality and stability. We put our money and
resources into our product and our workers. Luxottica spends much more of their
money on marketing than they do on producing their products or paying decent
wages. Their quality compares to many budget lines made in China. If you want a
cheap pair of Chinese glasses you can get them for a much better price if you
    don’t buy a Luxottica product.

Our company will never be number 1 in sales. We wouldn’t want to be. We all
make a decent living. We look forward to producing the finest eyewear for the
next 100 years and beyond. Our goal is to produce the best in eyewear, take
care of our workers, and continue to provide discerning Drs. and opticians with
a product that they can stand by and be proud to deliver to their patients and
    customers.

When I saw this on 60 minutes, it made me sick. There are so many people that need affordable glasses & this man is making it impossible. I think GREED has overtaken him.

  • shelley

That is not true. Leslie Stahl should of asked about the overinflated cost of their lenses too. I’m an optician with a private dr for 20 years. Physcio Enhanced lenses at Lenscrafters is $1400. At my office they are $400. It is crazy. We have been saying for years they are a monopoly. The news just found about them. Yes they own alot of good brands and if that is what someone wants they are going to pay. It’s all about the brands with Luxottica. Now they own Eyemed!!! It will never end as long as people only care about name brands.

  • Tired of the BS!

I can’t believe ALL the Complaining about a product that people NEED! Eyeglasses are a Necessity for Most people buying them. I don’t see anybody Complaining about the $1000 Purses or Shoes being SOLD! $1000 Purse being sold that does nothing but hold your CRAP! When you can get the same job done by a Plastic Wal-mart bag that costs maybe 10 Cents. And lets Not forget the $1000 to $3000 Shoes being sold that Do Not help, comfort or support your Foot or Arch, But Ohhhh they look Soooo Cute! PLEEEASE! 60 Minutes Get your Frikin act together! Oh yeah, just wondering 60 minutes. Would you have gotten ALL OVER Luxottica if they were owned by an Amercan? Got a problem with the Italians?

  • Jemienah

    where do u work walmart?

  • Jemienah

that’s a bunch of shit dude, luxottica is the only decent maker of fine eyewear on the market all other product is flawed with quality issues. Does your company allow customers to replace there lenses when scratched NO does your company send parts or repair parts for very cheap NO Guarantee you when your crap gets scratched or a simple temple needs replacing guess what nothing to be done when luxottica replaces and repairs for hardly nothing and you can maintain a long life with their product. U are an idiot!

  • http://www.facebook.com/neaoptiki Angelo Destounis

Why you say he is an idiot? I am from Greece and my experience with Luxottica is bad, as it takes more than 3 weeks for a spare part and the prices are x5 up.

I am Greek optical frames manufacturer of 100% handmade products in Greek production line. When it comes to discuss for quality we never use Luxottica as an example.

i.e. You will find injection models (the cheapest material used and lowest quality) with MSRP 350$. The cost is not more than 4$ in China! It’s all about marketing.

  • PhillyDude

This was a one-sided attack on Luxottica. If you go to the Vision Expo in New York, you will find out very easily that CLEARLY there are thousands of eyewear manufacturers offering broad styles. This witch hunt to criticize companies that acquire other companies can
also be directed towards Ford and GM and Macys, all of whom have
    acquired many different brands.

How many times have you bought a cheap pair of glasses and had them fall apart? Then ask yourself how many times a respectable designer brand has released low-quality eyewear. As a member of the eye industry for 16 years, I can tell you the number of complaints and repairs on a respectable designer brand are FAR lower than a generic brand. I mention respectable because every once in a while, a brand gets ridiculously popular but does not follow up with quality products. During those 15 minutes of fame, the brands give themselves and designer glasses a bad name. However, respectable designer brands offer quality materials, unique designs and excellent customer service.

Bottom line, the journalist who did this special should have spent more time researching the field rather than passing off a half-baked superficial view of the industry as a damaging 15 minute segment.
