Lynn Hirschberg Leaves New York Times…For W?

It’s only Stefano Tonchi’s first week on the job as editor in chief of W magazine, and the masthead is already getting a makeover.

New York Times Magazine heavyweight and editor at large Lynn Hirschberg has left the magazine for what sources say is a new home at W.

It makes sense, considering Tonchi is the former editor in chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine and as WWD’s Nick Axelrod adroitly points out, W has been sans an entertainment editor since Gabe Doppelt left for the Daily Beast last June.

Hollywood was Hirschberg’s beat at the Times, and during her tenure she profiled celebrities such as George Clooney, Julianne Moore, Tyra Banks, and Megan Fox – who just so happened to be W‘s March cover girl.

Rumors have floated that part of Tonchi’s vision for W is to up the entertainment ante and land larger and more current celebrities — and as such, Hirschberg seems like a perfect fit.

While WWD stops just short of confirming her new home, we’d be surprised if Hirschberg left what is arguably a cushy and coveted home at the Times‘ mag for anywhere other than W.
