Madeleine Albright’s Pin Collection Goes On Display
As Hillary‘s penchant for pantsuits proves, the job of Secretary of State comes with a pretty serious dress code. But while arm bearing sheaths may not fly in the Situation Room, it seems former post-holder, Madeleine Albright wasn’t quite as sartorially subdued as her strict tailoring might have suggested.
According to Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection,Smithsonian Institute, Albright was quite the masterful accessorizer, often using her bold jewels to communicate messages–both pointed and political–during her diplomatic tenure.
“I wore the boldest American flag pin I had when meeting with Kim Jong-il, Albright explains. “North Koreans are taught from an early age that America is evil; I wanted them to reconcile that reputation with photos of their exalted leader playing host to me.” The collection-which spans more than a century of jewelry design includes everything from dime-store pins to designer creations and even a Valentine’s Day present from her youngest daughter. Got to love a lady who knows how to get to the point.
The exhibition will be on view from June 18 – October 11, 2010 at the Smithsonian Castle in Washington, D.C.
