Manolo Blahnik Had No Idea His J.Crew Collab Was Happening
J.Crew’s printed Manolo Blahnik pumps were easily the most talked about collaboration of New York Fashion Week, but at least one party had no idea it was even happening.
In an interview with Vogue UK, Blahnik said the news was a complete surprise.
“I have been approached so many times to do one, but I don’t want to work for a big company where I’ll have to have lots of meetings where I’m told what I can and can’t do. My niece, Kristina, handles that sort of thing for me – it’s just not for me. I was recently contacted by J Crew to do something with them, so I sent them over 45 pairs of shoes, and they announced we were doing a collaboration. I had no idea about it!”
Last month, the iconic cobbler told the Wall Street Journal, “I recently turned down a lot of money to create a mass-market type product. I don’t want to make that sort of money if I am polluting my brand.” Since no one in their right mind would consider an association with J.Crew a pollution of any kind, and considering the shoes aren’t priced much cheaper than his average designs — word is they’ll be selling at $550 a pop — this collaboration may just be the perfect fit.
