How Marc Jacobs And Victoria Beckham Bonded Over A Fake Handbag
These days, Victoria Beckham comes in just behind Anna Wintour on the list of people we would least expect to see leaving the house in knockoff designer duds. But not so back in the early aughts, before Beckham had truly exploded on to the fashion scene, and was photographed while carrying her son and *gasp* a fake Louis Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse graffiti handbag.
Speaking at the 92Y on Wednesday, Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs recalled seeing the offending picture on the front page of a tabloid at the time. Rather than take the knockoff as an affront, Jacobs sent Beckham the real deal, and the pair became fast friends. So much so in fact that, years later, he would go on to cast her front and center in a campaign for his signature line, poking her head out of life-sized branded shopping bags and caressing a no-doubt authentic handbag as if it were her lover.
Only in fashion, you guys.
