Marilyn Monroe’s Pink Dress Auctioned for $319,000
Marilyn Monroe is known for a lot of things — acting in movies, being absurdly gorgeous, singing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy and the creation of countless high points in American culture and fashion. And the clothes she wore along the way are worth their weight in gold and then some.
Proof of their value? The Telegraph reports that the iconic pink satin dress the triple threat wore to sing Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes fetched $319,000 at auction last week.
The dress was just one of the lots in the Profiles in History auction that tool place from June 10 to 12 in Los Angeles. A few other costume gems went home with new owners, too — Mary Poppins’ bottomless carpet bag sold for $97,911, and the Wicked Witch of the West’s pointed hat took $206,130.
But the real story is Monroe’s dress, which we feel comfortable characterizing as one of the most important pieces of movie costume history to ever reach the auction block. We hope whoever bought it will donate it to a museum that will allow us to get a close look at it, and we couldn’t possibly begrudge them trying it on once or twice. For more than the value of the average American home, that dress had better fit like a glove.
