On Thursday, Martha Stewart Will Teach ALT To Make Vichyssoise
Somewhere at the intersection of our undying love of fashion and our intense love of super delicious food, there’s a fantasy that involves sitting down over a bowl of hearty soup with Andre Leon Talley and Martha Stewart. Yesterday, it (almost) came true.
Talley will guest star on the episode of Stewart’s show that airs Thursday, and we were lucky enough to score a a pretty prime seat at its taping. Talley will show up in the show’s opener and plays a big role in two of its six segments. He and Martha will talk about (what else?) fashion and food.
Talley opens the show with a look at a few designers who presented their collections at New York Fashion Week, giving equal weight to Rachel Roy clothes that can be found at Macy’s and Proenza Schouler matte alligator skin coat so luxe it doesn’t even have a price tag. (Talley will be wearing one of his infamous caftans, and Martha put on a pretty fabulous Marni cardigan with a faux lapel. Just so you know.)
After talking about how Tyra Banks is the Martha Stewart of fashion, Martha promises to teach Talley how to make vichyssoise.
“I call it potato leek soup,” Talley says to laughter from the audience, “but for you it’s vichyssoise.”
There will also be segments featuring chef Laurent Tourondel and Sally Ferguson of the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center (yes, that exists).
But afterwards, Talley comes back to make the soup. Martha asks him to be careful while he’s cutting up potatoes and washing the dirt off the leeks.
“You used to go to fancy French restauraunts and there was grit in the salad, and people thought that was the thing,” Talley says. “I didn’t.”
We’d say that we wouldn’t want to spoil the ending of the show, but it’s a Martha Stewart production and it basically goes the same way all of her celebrity guest segments do: there are some flubs and nervous giggles from Andre, but with Martha’s guidance, the end result is perfect. Duh.
The show will air on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 10 am and again the same day at 2 pm. We suggest you watch — it’s going to be seriously good fun.
