PHOTOS: The 8 Met Gala Looks That Blew Us Away
by Justin Fenner | 9:40 am, May 3rd, 2011
We sort of expected to be blown out of the water by the looks at the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala last night. After all, the event is all about fashion, and last night’s, specifically, was about the creations of one of the greatest designers of our time, the late Alexander McQueen . McQueen’s designs were known for their grand scale, high drama, innovative use of materials and nods to time gone by. And the women who made the biggest impressions on the red carpet last night wore gowns that did the exact same things. From Madonna ‘s gorgeous Old Hollywood look to the extreme volume of Crystal Renn ‘s dress, you’ll find all the looks that we loved below. Take a peek, then tell us who you think did it best.

1. Madonna
The Queen of Pop showed up in a star-spangled dress designed by Stella McCartney , who co-chaired last night's gala. We love the look because, well, if you told us that these photos had been taken in 1947 on a red carpet in Hollywood, we'd believe you -- but we'd believe they were from the year 2011 just as easily.
2. Daphne Guinness
The artist and heiress got ready for the gala in front of a window at Barneys Madison Avenue flagship store, to the delight of a small group of assembled onlookers. Her feathered dress is one of the most beautiful Sarah Burton ever designed, and we think it was a lovely tribute for Guinness to wear it to last night's event.
3. Karolina Kurkova
Karolina Kurkova 's bold dress and lace leggings combo by Jean-Paul Gaultier is one of the most daring looks we saw last night. And just look at the height of those Loubs!
4. Taylor Swift
There are so many things to love about Taylor Swift's J. Mendel dress. It's soft and interesting looking, feminine and complex, and the color is to die for.
5. Leelee Sobieski
It may be a little simple, but we think Leelee Sobieski 's Vionnet dress was daring and modern and inventive all at the same time. It's cut daringly low, accentuated with an intricate gold belt and the weirdest platform shoes we've ever seen. We think McQueen himself would have loved it.
6. Crystal Renn
Do we really have to explain why Crystal Renn 's look is so awesome? Look at her . Look at the hair. Look at the dress (it's designed by Zac Posen ). Now back to the hair. Try to find something wrong with this look. Just try.
7. Christina Ricci
Ricci also showed up in a Zac Posen dress, and it's a whole lotta dress. She looks great in it, of course, but we're mostly impressed that she was able to walk around all night in a frock that's bigger than she is.
8. Diane Kruger
Kruger wore a dress from her best friend and designer Jason Wu . Her look is another throwback to 1940s red carpet glamour, but the deep slit up the skirt of her dress is what took this look over the top.
