PHOTOS: We’re Concerned About Michele Bachmann’s Manicure

They say you should dress for the job you want, and it follows that you should accessorize and have an analogous beauty routine for it, too. If that’s the case, we don’t think Michele Bachmann really wants to be president.

RELATED: WATCH: Did Ron Paul’s Eyebrows Fall Off During This Week’s GOP Debate?

That’s because last night at the CNN debate among the GOP presidential candidates in Las Vegas, Bachmann gestured and gesticulated her points about Iran’s penchant for nuclear weapons and tax reform with a French manicure. And while we’ll be the first to admit that we’re pretty concerned about nukes and taxes, we also just cannot get past the tips of Bachmann’s nails.

Bachmann’s manicure, which she’s been wearing for months — possibly even years — is probably the least presidential style choice any of the GOP candidates have made over the course of the campaign. (And we include Newt Gingrich‘s awful purple tie when we say that.)

Regardless of what party they come from, we expect our president to be a modern citizen of the world. All a French manicure says to the world is, “I’m about ten years behind the times.” Seriously — when was the last time you heard someone at a nail salon ask for traditional, white French tips? Moreover, when was the last time you saw a woman in power wearing the manicure? Meg Whitman doesn’t seem to wear any polish on her short-clipped nails, and neither does German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Queen Elizabeth II can’t be spoken for — her majesty always wears gloves in public.

Don’t get us wrong. The French manicure isn’t necessarily a bad look, it’s just not very with it. Is that what Bachmann is trying to tell us about herself?

Take a look at her nails below and tell us what you think.

Aw, Styleite! I like her nails! French tips are like the solid red tie of manicures: Classic, simple, and not too distracting. Unlike certain nautically-themed outfits.

  • milosh

Very garish and one-percenty.  Less like a solid red tie of manicures and more like the Juicy-Suit/Ugg boot of manicures.  It just won’t go away.

  • Anonymous

I think the up-do is a marked improvement in the professionalism column, though. And boy do lady-suits need to get better. Can we please get anything simple and classic like a regular old tailored suit Mitt and company get to wear?

  • Caroline

French manicures reek of Jersey mall rats trying to be “classy.”

  • Bikerk

Good one, Caroline!  If you gotta work at classy, you ain’t!

  • Anonymous

Are you kidding? French tip manicures are classic. Except hers look like gels or fake nails. That’s not even a French manicure. THOSE are fake nails. Entirely different thing.

Presidential candidates are serious not celebrities obsessed with dumb things like clothes, accessories, hair.  Post some stories about celebrities or explain to your daughters, moms, sisters, friends that women are just about their looks and yes, this website belongs in the 1950′s.

  • http://www.triplemaxtons.com Kirsten @ Triple Max Tons

So it isn’t the classiest manicure around, but I can’t help but be irritated by this post. Shouldn’t the focus on a presidential candidate be on policy and not superficial things like looks? Forgive me, I didn’t know that running for office is in the same arena as a beauty pageant.

Michele Bachmann is svelte, stylish, stately; also bold, brilliant, & beautiful. She will be an exciting & effective President.

  • Jack

    what are you smoking?

  • Jack

FYI This is a fashion site…. if you want politics go to CNN… duh!

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Ty!! I was going to comment about her outfit in comparison to her manicure… you did quite well!!

  • RW

Duh - I started on Mediaite and ended up here.

This is sexist.  Where are the feminists?  Oh right, I forgot.  Feminists only show up if you’re a liberal

  • my2centshere

Only Mediaite would put this on the top of the page.

French Manicures are ’10 years behind the times’ ?…..Get real! Who is your style advisor Justin? French/American Manicures reflect the look of the natural nail. This piece is the craziest thing I’ve read today…are you suggesting women should emulate the choices of Angela Merkle and Meg Whitman? Seriously? Oh, wait! It’s a joke….(sigh)…ok..good.

  • Pit Boss

MB is also sporting a Brazilian Wax. Marcus did it for her after reading how in Cosmo. He was yelling “icky!!!” the entire time from what my sources tell me.

  • http://twitter.com/LifeDontWasteIt Leslie A H Redweik

Finally some real substance to talk about…  First let’s take a look at Romney’s Overly dark, overdyed look leaving the fakely outdated ‘distinquished’ gray. Perry’s dye job is better and looks a little more natural because it’s looks dull and makes him look like and aged SharPei, but lacks the natural highlights to look, well, natural. While I give Reagan a pass – he was from Hollywood after all – men dying their hair it gives off a kind of creepy desperate or metrosexual feel. Santorum’s hair – I swear I can see it thinning during the debates. Newt and Paul of course come off as scolding professors or Papa Gingrich and Papa Paul so I guess Gramp’s tired old white mop is okay for them, but let’s face it Paul is a shrimp with crooked ties and Newt is still too fat. I honestly am so worried about Cain’s total lack of knowledge concerning anything outside of business, his boring hair just doesn’t get my attention however. So maybe he wins the Hair Wars? Just don’t let him near foreign or military policy.

  • Italians5

Seriously, I can’t stand this nutjob, but is there really some idiot back there writing about this?
    Who gives a shit?

  • jessica Hicks

How can you focus on her policy comments when she’s waving those distracting, tacky, fake nails in your face?  I don’t really mind French manicures when it’s done on real nails in a tasteful and not distracting way.  What I do mind is a presidential candidate with fake nails that are longer than a real housewife’s and that have been filed into a squared-off shape like a castmember of Jersey Shore.  Can you imagine her meeting with a foreign dignitary and impatiently clack clack clacking those nails on the table?  Ugh gives me the chills.  By the way, I’d also take issue with her too-heavy application of lipstick and dark eyeshadow if her nails weren’t such a distraction.

By the way, to all those haters out there, A. this is a fashion website and B. yes it DOES matter how our president presents him or herself to the world.  It’s an undisputed fact that people make judgements based on physical appearance.

It didn’t take long for the sexist to show their ugly faces. Has anyone ever attacked a male on their nails?

I live in Las Vegas where the debate took place.  French manicures aka pink and whites are very popular out here.  Between the fake tans, boob jobs, etc., etc., her manicure if par for the course out here.  And yes, the suit she was wearing was atrocious.

  • Mstrongny

You have got to be kidding.. if manicures is what the liberals are attacking now. How about the horrid “candid” photo of Ms. Obama in the grocery store / target … whatever get over your petty political selves.

  • Anonymous

I guess Obama’s mom jeans and girly bike present a dignified Presidential manner?

  • Anonymous

i’m not american so i don’t really get it – what’s wrong with french manicure ?

  • Kendra

French manicure is fine.  Square tips say white trash.

  • Anonymous

    Admiral Bachmann–to the bridge!

  • Anonymous

Wow, next to Gingrich she looks like half a person!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THIS ARTICLE?..HER FRENCH MANICURE IS WHAT YOU FIND OBJECTIONABLE ABOUT THIS WOMAN?????

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Theresa-Darklady-Reed/581698361 Theresa ‘Darklady’ Reed

I dunno what ultra cool hipster reality you guys live in, but there are traditional white tip French manicures all over the place in Portland, OR. It’s a stylish but neutral nail treatment, so WTF?

She’s running for president, not Vogue cover model… so even if you’re right, she’s *supposed* to be “10 years behind the times.”

Frankly, it was her Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band jacket I wasn’t too sure about the other night, especially with black trousers. I like that she’s not falling for the typical politica attire, though. She’s got a classier look than Sarah Palin but still manages to look professional and contemporary.

BTW — RW, Mstrongny and you other neo con asshats? Piss off. Maybe some of the feminists haven’t gotten around to reading this article yet… and what does the POTUS’ biking togs or the FLOTUS under cover Target garments have to do with Michelle Bachmann, who was appearing on stage during a presidential contender debate? Context has meaning, ya know…

All of that aside, Bachmann’s deranged and shouldn’t even be holding the position of power that she does.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1051017636 Karen Varga-Sinka

Oh come on, her nails are fine – of course she is going to wear a french mani – what, did you think she would sport something like “Bitches Brew” from Lippman? There is plenty else you guys can rag her for… nails isn’t it!

  • Anonymous

Who the hell cares if MB had a french manicure, or that her nail tips are white? Can we deduce there’s a bit of sexism going on here?

Come on Justin, fair is fair, equal time for both. Where’s the article on Newty boys nail tips? We’re all dying to know..

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBLKJM6R7ULM7GTKGNVDOQYWOI daisymae

I Agree!! The Nails are way too long, look very Jersey, and I can hear them clacking during the debate.
BTW, have you seen her shoes?  Oy vay

  • http://twitter.com/HillbillySkill Victoria Collins

Her nails are as plastic and false as she is. But really, I couuldn’t stop looking at how wrinkly and crepey her neck is. Eww!

  • Gandlyank

oh my gosh people grow up.  You sound like a bunch of middle/high schoolers….This shouldnt be what america is about people….

  • Guest

you spend your life writing trash, Hurting other people
based solely on YOUR personal opinions of their ‘fashion’ choices?
French Nails are supposed to tell us that she doesn’t really want the
job?   What does the fact that you write about some unfounded
connection between nail choices and ones ability to lead – tell us about
you?    I get the notion that you are simply too much of a goob to be
able to write an article with substance to it.  Hence, the reason that
your next “World Exclusive Report” is about a 5 inch high heel that
can easily puncture a lovers heart (for the insurance money, of course) and
immediately be recycled – allowing the murderer to feel like she is doing her
part to save the planet.   You are really a groundbreaking
    journalist. Even you
know that a slug could write a more compelling story.

  • AngieC

I don’t get the issue with her french manicure? It pretty much goes with everything and is fairly subtle. What is supposed to be the “cool” look for a professional woman in a conservative field?
