Did Michelle Obama Really Spend $50K At Agent Provocateur?

Yesterday the British press went wild over a report that Michelle Obama spent $50,000 on lingerie at Agent Provocateur‘s Madison Avenue boutique. We thought the story, which first appeared in the Telegraph, seemed questionable — and we were right. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has set the record straight.

The Telegraph alleged that Obama had part of Madison Avenue shut down so she could shop for skivvies with Queen of Qatar Sheikha Mozah. During a press briefing at the White House on Monday, Carney denied the story — and slammed British publications in the process.

“At least when I was a reporter, usually the standard for British tabloid reporting was the assumption that it was false. In this case, it’s utterly false, and it’s irresponsible of an American news organization to repeat the story, even allowing that it could be true. So it’s wrong.”

Women’s Wear Daily reports that when pressed for proof that the story wasn’t true, Carney refused. “I’m not going to go there… It’s false.”

The implication that Michelle Obama would take another intelligent woman, the Queen of Qatar no less, panty shopping… that in itself is ridiculous. This is not the Real Housewives of Government Officials.

it’s sad that this even makes headlines.  right now, the front runner of the republican party earned twenty one million dollars in one year while his chief rival had a $250k revolving credit line with tiffany.  even if michelle obama had bought this lingerie, she’d still be the least out of touch out of the field.
