Michelle Obama Goes DIY On Leopard Derek Lam Dress
We love how Michelle Obama constantly recycles the designer pieces in her wardrobe, but we’ve never seen her upcycle one of them quite like this before. For this week’s National Design Awards, the first lady put on her very own designer cap and reworked a runway dress she’s had for almost a year by chopping the sleeves off of it.
Well, we’re sure she didn’t actually perform the sartorial surgery herself, but whoever did did a really good job of it! The brown-and-black printed Derek Lam dress previously had a bracelet length sleeve, but Obama’s tailor cut them down to size to reveal those arms everyone is always talking about. How do we know it was a success? Because it looks like it was always meant to be that way. Styleite conbributing editor and celebrity stylist Mary Alice Stephenson told Paper magazine:
She was wearing this Derek Lam dress that I know she had worn before, and I love that she actually cut off the sleeves and shortened it. She recycled chic and I thought that was really cool.
