Michelle Obama Goes All-American For State Of The Union

In tonight’s State of the Union address, President Obama tackled a myriad of issues, both social and political, affecting Americans today. Topics included healthcare, unemployment, DADT, gun control, education, and more — all of which paled in comparison to the monumental decision made by First Lady Michelle Obama in preparation for the evening’s address: her choice of attire.

Lambasted by some — okay, well, one — for choosing to wear a British designer to last week’s China state dinner, Obama no doubt knew that the nation tonight wasn’t waiting on the words of her husband, it was waiting on the designer of her dress.

In a sartorially stunning, though perhaps politically safe decision, Obama chose a soft, off-white shift dress with a round neckline and three-quarter length sleeves by American designer Rachel Roy. Dare we call the look a little Jackie O-esque? But what does this mean, this patriotic choice? We know Michelle Obama’s style has some serious economic clout, but if the goal of going homegrown is to encourage jobs and local manufacturing, shouldn’t the decision be about where the clothes are made, and not where the designer resides?

We’re not criticizing Roy or the dress — just playing the dutiful devil’s advocate.

For what it’s worth, this isn’t the first time Obama has worn a design by Roy. The first lady wore a velvet skirt and top combo from the designer’s Fall 2010 collection while in India late last year, as well as a Spring 2009 dress while speaking at a conference on volunteering in San Francisco in June of that same year.

Should The First Lady Dress For Fashion Or For Country?

I like Mrs. Obama’s dress choice. I mean she always knows how to make a good impression. I don’t think we’ll ever see her wearing something inappropriate.

    She always wear inappropriate things!
She has not a clue about fashion. Ok, if she was in some other scenario she might be thought “fresh”. She is the wife of the most powerful man in the world, she should dress accordingly. She is an embarrassment. I shudder every time they compare her to Jackie o. So she has toned arms, who cares! In her ensemble for the China rep, she looked like a football player. Poor posture, huge exposed arms. I’ll stop now.

You really need to work on that jealously and blind hate thing. Mrs. O. is a compassionate, elegant, intelligent, and beautiful woman and we are fortunate to have her as our First Lady.

  • Beau

She always looks great in what ever she wear. I love her and her family . They are always in my prayers.
