Middle School Pisses Off Parents By Banning Uggs In Classrooms

There’s at least one middle school in America where kids are no longer allowed to wear Uggs, and parents who send their kids to school there are royally ticked off about the new policy.

Pottstown Middle School in Pottstown Philadelphia recently banned students from wearing Uggs and other similar squishy boots with fur lining. Principal Gail Cooper said in a letter to parents that many students use the boots to smuggle in items “that are prohibited in school,” like cell phones. The Pottstown cell phone policy is that kids can bring their iPhones and BlackBerries and Androids to campus, but they have to leave them in their lockers when they head to class.

And now, that’s the policy with Uggs, too. Pottstown students are allowed to wear the boots up until they have to go to class, but have to change into other shoes beforehand. And that has more than a few parents riled up. A few left messages on the school’s Facebook page, decrying the new rule as unnecessary and patently ineffective. Here are our favorites, culled from a list curated by The Pottstown Mercury.

“Quite absurd,” posted Darlene Roen Bainbridge. “How about a cell phone ban in school, as reasonable footwear is more necessary than a cell phone? UGG…Sounds like fashion profiling…lol!”

“If a middle school student is determined enough to have their cell phone on them, believe me they will regardless of the shoes they are wearing,” wrote Jessica August. “I’m assuming this is applying to mostly girls since I rarely see any boys wearing Uggs…. Pockets, bras, socks, what’s next?? I think this is absurd!”

“Are you seriously kidding me?” posted Julie Lyn Miller-Gallisdorfer. “What I have to say about this topic can’t be posted in any open forum for public viewing. When the schools started paying to raise and clothe my children then maybe…maybe they can have a say in dictating my child’s wardrobe. Totally ridiculous.”

You do not tell me how to raise my child! We love it — and we love that so many parents have spoken out to defend their children’s right to wear what they want to wear. It’s cold out there, and Uggs are easy to slip on and keep your feet warm. If the school wants to get rid of cell phones in class, it should do a better job of enforcing its existing policy, not create a new one that they don’t need.

They must not have anything better to complain about.  If they don’t like…homeschool!

If the school has no uniform code, banning uggs, or any other item of clothing/footware, is moot. The school wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if this went to court.
Cell phones are small, if a student, girl or boy, wants to smuggle one into the classroom, they’ll find a way, uggs or no uggs.  Pottstown middle school, principal Gail Cooper especially, needs to spend less time on trivial issues, & more time on inportant issues, like teaching. You know, TEACHING,  that we the taxpayers pay Ms Cooper & her co-workers to do.

So dumb. If cell phones are not allowed in class, why not just confiscate them and don’t give them back. I guarantee that a kid would leave it in their locker if they knew they would lose it for good if they didn’t. Banning a certain brand of shoe just makes the school officials look stupid on the news.

If that’s the case they might as well ban pockets, backpacks, purses and anything else a cell phone can fit in. They need to enforce the cell phone rule by taking it away and calling the parent to come get it.

honestly i think all schools should have an indoor footwear policy, saves the classroom floors from slush etc, is safer, no slipping on puddles in the classroom. BTW UGG’s are the most impractical boots for winter anyways, they are not waterproof, once they get wet your feet freeze. Parents need to rethink appropriate footwear for children, instead of what looks cool, or what the current trend is. Personally i think parents need to force their kids to leave cell phones at home, I never had a cell phone when i went to school and i lived, lol.
