Why Misha Nonoo Would Design Maternity For Herself Before Kate
Walking into the Nonoo presentation on Tuesday afternoon was like taking a trip to Russia with a British bestie. We were met at the entrance of the High Line Room at the Standard Hotel by a hot male model dressed in a military uniform, while female models in layered and furry ensembles stood in a row, and cater waiters passed around mini meat pies and tea. Every so often, the male model would escort two of the models to switch their positions, a changing of the guards, if you will. We chatted with designer Misha Nonoo about her fall collection, and of course, Kate Middleton.
Nonoo is one of several designers like Trina Turk and Giovanni Bianchi of La Perla who are holding presentations this week as opposed to digital or traditional runway shows. Of course, everyone has their reasons, but for Nonoo, “There’s nothing like an editor or buyer being able to come in and touch something. But I think at some point, we’ll get into runway. Runway shows are so quick, and then (snaps fingers), it’s over.”
Agreed. (There’s also the bonus of food at these presentations!)
The collection includes 20 ensembles inspired by the Russian countryside, which translates to lots of layers, fur, and tailored separates. “It’s a British girl going to Russia,” Nonoo said of her collection, “and it’s kind of like what she would pack for this adventure weekend that she’s going on. The military details and hats are very Russian, but at the heart of it, it’s about a very English girl.”
The current It-girl in Britain is none other Kate, and while Sarah Burton would love to design maternity wear for the pregnant Duchess, Nonoo is a bit hesitant. “She’s creative and strong and she’s an ideal person to dress,” Nonoo told us.
“I mean, I would of course dress her. She’s wonderful. [But] I don’t know. I’ll cross that bridge to maternity when I get there. I think when I get pregnant, I’ll probably start doing maternity wear. I’ll be like, ‘This is getting in the way. What am I gonna wear?’”
