Plus Size Woman Skewers American Apparel’s ‘XLent’ Model Search

Remember a couple of weeks ago, when American Apparel launched what we called “the most uncomfortable and out of touch plus-sized model hunt in the history of model hunts”? Well, it’s still going. And one absolutely awesome lady apparently felt the same way and decided to enter — by giving the beleaguered brand a taste of its own, “XLent” medicine.

Armed with a cart full of groceries, a talented friend with a camera, and a free Sunday afternoon, Upton posed gorging on roast chicken, bathing in ranch dressing, and holding a cherry pie over her nether parts. In an interview with Jezebel, Upton explained the impetus behind the shoot and her submission.

I read Margaret’s article about the contest on your website and followed the link over. I immediately thought, based on the way it was written, “Wow, they really have zero respect for plus-sized women. They’re going to line them up like cattle and make puns about them until they’re blue in the face.” And then, as corny as it sounds, it just occurred to me that based on their “Hey, come on, fatties, we want you to play, too” tone, wouldn’t it be kind of brilliant to respond in a, “Thanks for letting me play, just let me try put down the pizza, first” similar mocking tone.

It was, in other words, a stroke of genius. And for what it’s worth, Upton is currently winning the contest.

Take that, American Apparel.

I am a big girl…I never or could never eat like that girl with the mess around her, and she probably doesn’t either–ITS A JOKE–cuz we’re treated like lepers or something…hello, when did the love, strength, intelligence or happiness of a person become unimportant??  I, personally, fell ill and suffered a devastating car accident–and with nothing to do but eat regular dinners and desserts, I gained weight…I don’t eat burgers and shakes…regular food, maybe too many sweets sometimes, and not active..I think a lot of folks are scared to gain weight…like they’re scared of the homeless people…They say we’re two paychecks away from being on the street, so peeps are scared…I guess they’re scared of the 20 or more extra pounds, that would make them unlovable!!! Or so they think.. I see girls at the gym working out, then following up with ciggies…I see some starving themselves sick, and go out for major drinking…so sad, they dont know health is important..they don’t care about the health. just looks, sorry…I BELIEVE what the “2012 thing” is REALLY about is tolerance, understanding, loving–you know, the real stuff that is important!!! Respect and peace…hoping to untwist some thinking….peace    The New Paradigm–kindness and respect and love rocks!!!

I’m more offended by American Apparel looking for extra market share and profit from a segment of unhealthy and obese people.  To “normalize” this segment of people is just the same as “normalizing” anorexia and bulimia.  An unhealthy lifestyle is an unhealthy lifestyle whether it comes in an undersized or oversized vessel.
