American Apparel Invites Disqualified Contest Winner On Trip To LA

American Apparel seems to be eating a little bit of humble pie after blasting out a nasty, poorly argued email response to the winner of their “Next BIG Thing” contest, Nancy Upton. While the email informed Upton that despite garnering the largest amount of votes American Apparel would be picking another winner, the brand has apparently since reached out and invited her to Los Angeles.

Upton wrote on her blog earlier today:

So.

I spoke with Iris Alonzo on the phone yesterday. She has graciously offered to fly Shannon and me out to LA to visit American Apparel and get a look at what it’s really like being inside the company.

I agreed, as long as I could write about what I saw. She said that would be fine.

Apparently the media response to Alonzo’s letter wasn’t exactly what American Apparel was hoping for, which should surprise no one except for, well, American Apparel.

We’re curious to see what kind of tour the brand gives Upton, but are already looking forward to her thoughts. And kudos to her for preemptively letting them know she’d be writing about her experience — good or bad.

I’m team American apparel actually, never thought I’d say that!
I’ve followed this story from the announcement of the contest, and honestly still don’t understand what the outrage is all about? Beyonce sings “bootylicious” and it becomes an anthem for curvy gals, AA references it, and they’re evil? Seems silly to me. And this chick entered the contest just to mock the brand and I’m sure that’s how she won. Doesn’t anyone care about the plus size girls who think the campaign was a good thing and entered honestly hoping to win? Doesn’t seem right that this girl should get any prize, AA needs to ignore the whiny haters and reward the girls who really wanted to win
