Naomi Breaks Camera Over Blood Diamond Allegations
We’ve always wondered what supermodels got up to in the 90s. You know — back when one could jet to far-flung locales without fear of the paparazzi laying in wait for a Liberian warlord to give you millions of dollars worth of conflict diamonds. Yup, those were the days. And now they’ve finally caught up to Naomi Campbell — and for her part, she’s not talking.
According to ABC news, Naomi is refusing to testify about a huge, uncut, “blood diamond” allegedly given to her in 1997 by former Liberian warlord Charles Taylor while the model was on a visit to South Africa. Taylor, a notorious African dictator, is currently on trial for war-crimes including using blood diamonds to purchase illegal weapons. Prosecutors say that Campbell’s testimony would help tie him to the purchase.
Asked about the diamond by ABC’s Nightline during a recent Fashion Week appearance to raise money for Haiti, she said, “I didn’t receive a diamond and I’m not going to speak about that.” In true Naomi fashion, she ends the interview by slamming the camera to the floor — so not a sign she’s hiding something.
But actress/activist Mia Farrow — who was also a guest during the 1997 visit — remembers things a little differently. “You don’t forget when a girlfriend tells you she was given a huge diamond in the middle of the night . . . There’s no doubt in my mind. All I thought was, ‘Gosh, what an amazing life Naomi Campbell has.’ Probably lots of men are always giving her diamonds.” Truthfully, we’d probably have thought the same thing, which make’s Farrow’s side seem pretty believable especially in light of Naomi’s “5th-ammendment” antics.
Guess her friend Liz Taylor was wrong: diamonds aren’t a girls best friend — especially when they leave a bloody trail.
