Do Natalie Portman’s Dior Ads Deserve To Be Banned?

The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned Christian Dior‘s Diorshow New Look Mascara ad featuring Natalie Portman for overzealous airbrushing and exaggerating the product’s results.

The product claims that it “thickens, separates, and extends the lashes for an infinitely multiple lash effect”, and the ad in question (which you can see below) focuses on Portman’s lush fringe. Her lashes are undoubtedly impressive, but one can obviously tell that some post-production work went into the ad.

The Telegraph reports that the ASA received a complaint about the ad’s exaggerated claims. Dior insisted that retouching was “minimal”, but admitted to enhancing Portman’s lashes via Photoshop. Dior didn’t put up much of a fight, and according to the ASA, the French house has agreed to withdraw the ad in lieu of a more formal investigation.

The complaint is similar to the ones filed against Julia Roberts‘ Lancome ad, Christy Turlington‘s Maybelline ad, and Georgia May Jagger‘s Rimmel ad, all of which were previously banned in the U.K.

Good for the UK! I wish regulations were more stringent in the US regarding advertisements with touch-ups. Some are so obvious it’s ridiculous.

I bet her fingernails aren’t actually that color either.

It was a l’Oreal’s claim. Shame on them – I never felt the truth in their adv of beauty products also! Everytime – it was only the promesses.
Anyway – good work – there is a very little part of truth in all beauty advertisements.
