PHOTOS: New Year’s Eve Ball Gets Outfitted With Waterford Crystal

Just the thought of spending New Year’s Eve in Times Square causes us to break out in hives, but an estimated million people will convene on the famed NYE spot to watch the ball drop — and millions more around the world will watch it at home.

Today 288 new Waterford crystal triangles were put on the ball, bringing its total to 2,688 triangles. Each triangle weighs 6.8 ounces and is less than a half an inch thick. They’re arranged in a design called “Let There Be Friendship”, because the triangles look like little people holding hands. We don’t exactly see it, but yay friendship!

Behold, the fanciest crystal ball in all the land:

I didn’t see any kind of crystal whatsoever!!  So where was it????  All it looked like was a bunch of confetti flying around, so how can anyone say a “crystal ball” was dropped????
