New York Times Discovers Straight Male Fashion Bloggers Exist
Today is the day the New York Times discovered that there are straight men who blog about fashion. Or, in which the Gray Lady stumbles upon #menswear.
The headline is “Straight Talk”, and the very first sentence of the piece (“Not every fashion blogger is a 15-year-old girl with an unhealthy obsession with Rei Kawakubo.”) hates on so-much-more-than-a-personal-style-blogger Tavi Gevinson. Anyway, five bloggers are profiled with the explanation that “the fact that they’re blogging about clothes that could have been worn by 19th-century miners means that they can gush about pocket stitching and still feel secure in their manhood”.
There are three separate references to Barbour jackets, as well as the requisite mentions of waxed canvas, dead-stock, Filson, selvage denim, and Red Wings. There are also the characters you come to expect — Michael Williams of A Continuous Lean, Lawrence Schlossman of Sartorially Inclined and How To Talk To Girls At Parties, Mordechai Rubinstein of Mister Mort. (Rubinstein doesn’t “really check blogs often”, which is arguably the most annoying thing a blogger can say.)
