Nicola Formichetti Named Artistic Director At Diesel
It’s official: Nicola Formichetti is the new artistic director at Diesel.
Renzo Rosso, the 57-year-old founder of the brand, told WWD that he’s finally found someone as crazy as he is to take over at Diesel: “I want him to do bigger things, different things. This is the right man to take the next step for a young company and a brand for people who are young of mind.”
Renzo explained that Formichetti will handle “a total view of the Diesel brand — product, communications, marketing and interior design.” But of course, this is Formichetti we’re taking about, so naturally, he also plans to take the brand to the next level and expand into “high fashion and couture to streetwear and activewear.” Both kept referring to ideas that would take place within the next “five, 10 years.”
Exact details haven’t been released, but according to the trade, the deal between Renzo and Formichetti have been in the making for a year and a half. Which means that Formichetti was already looking to leave Thierry Mugler after about six months. The reason was more or less due to Mugler’s “limited budgets” and Formichetti not being able to mesh his personal vision with the brand’s heritage. But seeing as how he left the house in extremely good shape, we’re guessing there might be a bit more to Formichetti’s story.
Nonetheless, we won’t see Formchetti’s work on Diesel products until fall 2014, but his new ads will debut in September — just in time for those fall fashion issues.
