Nike Won’t Change Name Of Its Joe Paterno Child Development Center

Nike‘s relationship with the Penn State football system has come under fire since news of the school’s child sex abuse scandal became public. But the sportswear and athletic goods company says it has no plans to distance itself from the school, or from the football team’s former head coach Joe Paterno.

Women’s Wear Daily reports that a number of critics want Nike to change the name of the on-site daycare center it runs at its corporate headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. In light of recent accusations that a former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, used his influence to cover up sexually abusing young boys, these critics say calling the center the “Joe Paterno Child Development Center” is inappropriate.

Still, the company won’t budge, saying that it will continue to work with Penn State on the various athletic products and licensed goods it has produced for the school over the years.

“Our relationship with Penn State remains unchanged,” Nike said in a statement. “We are deeply disturbed by the claims brought forth in the indictments. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

An industry branding analyst told WWD that Nike is right not to move too quickly on this — and pointed out that the company took more flak for not cutting ties to Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant during their own sex scandals.

So for now, the company will be holding onto the name of its center. How long they hold on to a favorably public perception, however, remains to be seen.

  • Ptorpey

penn state should not collectively be punished for the actions of a few.  plus joe pa didn’t hurt anyone and reported the second hand info to the proper persons on campus…the people who dropped the ball still have their jobs and joe pa, who has given his life and money to penn state was made the scape goat…what a crock of….

  • Get real.

Joe Paterno has done wonderful things for thousands of kids, students, and others. He has lived nearly 85 years (and other than this one oversight) as a model citizen. A faithful family man that is respected in his community for more than just football achievements. Did you know that most of his salary was donated to the school and Special Olympics? Why is it that 1 mistake cancels out 84 years worth of good deeds? He did not do anything illegal. He trusted somebody that hundreds of others trusted. Just look at who is on the board for Sandusky’s “charity” – other big names trusted him with kids too. You going after Arnold Palmer, Cal Ripkin, Mark Wahlburg?  If this were the Sandusky Center- than of course they should rename it, but it is not. Do the research. Joe has been villanized because his name gets more attention. I’m tired of it.  Leave the Paterno family alone.   Stop the rumors, stop putting “Penn State” and “Paterno” in your headlines and misleading those that don’t do any research. The police were involved long before Paterno was told anything, they had Sandusky on tape, and they let him go. Sandusky’s wife did nothing, the workers at Second Mile did nothing, and the police did nothing. Yes, Penn State has 2 people indicted for perjury, but  the hundreds of thousands of students, alumni, faculty, staff, fans and head coach of Penn State were not.
