Norma Kamali: There Is A Healthier Way To Be Thin

A few weeks ago, we posted about a column Norma Kamali wrote for the Huffington Post. After a careful reading, we thought the takeaway was this: models need to be thin, and they should maintain their figures by going on a liquid diet (and burning off any non-liquid calories by exercising).

Norma responded to us right away, explaining that she didn’t really get her point across. She also invited us to check out her wellness event on Thursday. We attended the event (the house was packed!), but most of the musings came from Norma’s panelists, who spoke on topics like organic diets and holistic medicine.

We caught up with Norma after the discussion, and here is what she had to say:

I think we can all agree that thin is beautiful, and it is unfortunate that models think tic tacs and cigarettes are the only way to stay thin. I think models should know there is another, healthier way to be thin.

Norma told us that ever since she cut out processed food, she has found herself looking better than ever. She thinks that if models followed a similar regimen, they would also see benefits in their hair and skin so “they wouldn’t have to wear pounds and pounds of makeup just to look healthy.”

But what about the article itself? “I wrote something that was meant to be tongue in cheek,” she said. We can’t say it came off as such, but we did appreciate being about to chat about this issue with Norma face-to-face.
