WATCH: Obamas Reveal The Story Behind That Famous Post-Election Pic
We’ve always envied Barbara Walters‘ job, and her latest interview with the Obamas just adds to that jealousy. On last night’s special edition of Nightline, Walters sat down with Barack and Michelle for their first joint post-election interview, and asked them all sorts of questions about the re-election, marriage, and yes, even that now-iconic photograph of them hugging during the campaign trail.
After a special tour of the
White House People’s House holiday decorations with Michelle, Walters gets down to business with the POTUS and FLOTUS about the photo of them hugging it out. President Obama tells Walters that the pic was taken while campaigning in Iowa, who then asks in amazement: “Why were you hugging her so hard in Iowa?” President Obama simply replies:
“‘Cause I love my wife.”
Aww! Michelle adds:
“And also, I hadn’t seen him in a while. I mean, you know, when you’re campaigning, you’re two ships passing in the night. And the first time I saw was when I walked on stage to greet him — and that’s my honey giving me a hug.”
And just when you think it couldn’t get any better, the President gives Michelle a loving side glance and says:
“I like giving you hugs.”
Our hearts just melted.
There’s obviously lots more to the interview, and we’re pretty sure Walters made someone cry, but that bit is just the best. Check it out right here:
