WATCH: Fox News Thinks China Poisoned The U.S. Olympic Uniforms
Yesterday, we told you why we’re not surprised that the Ralph Lauren-designed U.S. Olympic team uniforms were made in China. But it seems that lawmakers don’t feel the same, and neither does Fox News‘ Bob Beckel.
According to WWD, both Republicans and Democrats are denouncing the uniforms as unpatriotic and disgraceful. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is probably one of the most upset, and had this to say about the uniforms:
“I am so upset that I think the Olympic Committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them.”
Ouch. In a segment on Fox News, Beckel had some equally scathing words for the Chinese themselves, and said we should be more afraid of them than we should be of Islamic terrorists:
“They are so competitive, they probably would have put downers in the fabric to hurt our athletes. … I don’t trust them worth a damn, and I tell you, I wouldn’t let anything be done over there.”
That’s a pretty alarmist statement. ReFashioner took the same side, but their view had less to do with pointing fingers at the Chinese and more about patriotism and the welfare of workers. Here’s a conversation we had with them over Twitter last night:
We can certainly see the argument for having uniforms made in America and that have contributed to the U.S. economy while putting American athletes on the world stage. But our question is why this set of uniforms is generating such outrage when we buy things that are made in China every day. We’re willing to bet that Bob Beckel was wearing at least one item of clothing that was made in China when that segment was filmed and while he claimed that “he wouldn’t let anything be done over there.” Watch the segment below and see what you think.
