Cue Outrage: Ralph Lauren’s Olympics Uniforms Made In China

More and more people are hating on Ralph Lauren‘s Opening Ceremony uniforms for the U.S. Olympic Team. The duo over at Fox & Friends questioned the silly French beret, and now ABC News is shocked to find out that the uniforms for our athletes are made in China. SHOCKED.

In the segment below, ABC News staffers go to a Ralph Lauren store and get decked out in the U.S. Olympic team’s uniforms for the Opening Ceremony. Then the staffers find out that the outfits are made in China, not America. The staffers interview random people on the street, and one guy calls it “a national disgrace”. Nanette Lepore also weighs in on the situation, and says that it would be totally realistic for Lauren to make the uniforms in America.

Personally, I think it’s logical that the uniforms are made in China. And it’s not because I’m Chinese.

The fact that Lauren outsourced the production of the uniforms is purely a business deal. The prices for the Opening Ceremony uniform’s berets, scarves, jackets, and bottoms range from $55 to $598. To be profitable, Lauren needs to earn more money than the amount he spends on producing the uniforms. And to do that, he turned to Chinese laborers who will work for less money than Americans. It’s just another business deal, and that’s how most of your clothes are made too. Designers outsource a lot of production and manufacturing jobs overseas because labor is cheap and workers are plenty, so everyone needs to stop being shocked at this revelation.

I agree with some of the interviewers that Lauren should’ve thought twice about outsourcing the production of the clothes for patriotic reasons. But when it comes to profit and business, cash is king. And Lauren’s making a lot of it from these uniforms.

  • Made in USA

Disgusting. And I told people about this problem months ago in my Strictly USA newsletter. I am totally nauseated knowing that every stitch of clothing (including shoes) worn by the US athletes is made in China. And a lot of you may not know this, but EVERY single item including clothing, coffee mugs, pins, hats, etc. sold by the official US Olympic Store (teamusashop.com) is made in china or another southeast Asian country. Completely and totally disgraceful and totally avoidable. We could make all this stuff here and add thousands of jobs. Imagine what a difference this would make to our country. Why can’t we do this? Oh, and Jada Wong: your comment (I think it’s logical that the uniforms should be made in China) is completely offensive. If you like it so much…move back to China—NOW. Whats that? You can’t make enough? You don’t like living there? Too many people? Boohoo. You owe every American an apology..also NOW!!! You’re disgraceful. I would fire your a** immediately.

your faux outrage and totally ILLOGICAL rationalzations are very telling Ms. Wong. These uniforms could have been made here CHEAPER and BETTER QUALITY, possibly even with an AMERICAN home country discount. As if Ralph Lauren with his gigantic logo plastered on the uniform really needed to max out his profits making clothing for his countries Olympic team! There will be a huge backlash from this and i can Guarantee you that it will not happen again and may even be corrected before the Games start! The US of A put men on the moon, i’m pretty sure we could make some elementary school copycat outfits for our Olympic team! Shame on you and shame on your unAmerican article!

  • Whitepants

@ Made & @ Ptmg23 and your faux Patriotism is just as offensive.  Make sure you keep it close to you the next time you walk into Walmart or Costco, you know, that huge american bastion of savings…where everything inside is made so cheaply in America…not.

  • USANOW

@whitepants, don’t shop at those crapholes. we have a Made in the USA store in my town. don’t try to make yourself feel better by casting stones at someone you don’t know. if you like Chinese junk buy all you like, but our U.S. atheletes should be dressed in American made uniforms. you are on the wrong side of this issue, probably one of maybe one% who see this as okay. listen and you will hear the backlash.

  • Dee102321

I  have one thing to said I will not give money to to olympic anymore, did anyone notes that the america flag is on the wrong side of the jacket. It such be on the left side not the the companys logo. everthing you buy from the usa shop are made in even the pins we to the tshirts ect. the uniform are a disgrace.

  • Castanedagus

Well shame in Lauren, how anti-American can he be to have those garments made in China!   Would it have really cost him THAT much to have them made in NY, don’t they have cut & sew sweatshops there, with Chinese workers???  And of all things, for the AMERICAN TEAM!!!!   I hope Americans take notice next time THEY buy his overpriced, glorified cotton crap MADE IN CHINA for more profit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
