Simon Doonan Grew A Beard So People Wouldn’t Call Him ‘Madam’
Lately, Barney’s Creative Ambassador-At-Large Simon Doonan has been thinking a lot about hair. For the first time in recent memory, there’s a good deal of it on his face — and it’s also all over the bag he designed for Patti Hansen‘s new charity venture Hung On U.
Doonan told us Thursday night at the venture’s launch party that he’s been growing out a beard since this summer so that no one would mistake him for a woman — which is a thing that’s actually happened to him.
“The reality is, I wear so many flowery shirts that when I go into a store or the airport or something, people often say, ‘Good morning madam’,” he said. “So I thought, maybe I should grow a goatee, and it actually worked. I haven’t gotten a ‘Good morning, madam’ in months.”
If the hair worked for him, maybe it’ll work for his handbag, one of a line of 20 canvas cross-body bags that have been decorated by celebrities like Keith Richards and Zach Galifianakis, and fashion industry luminaries like Elle Magazine‘s Joe Zee and designer Diane von Furstenberg. The bags are being auctioned off on Charity Buzz, and all the proceeds will benefit Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Foundation.
It’s a good cause, but it touched a bit of a spark in Doonan, who says he’s in the competition to win.
“I just wanted to do something that nobody else would do because I’m insanely competitive,” he said. “I thought I had to do the best one, no one else is going to do hair.”
