People We Love: Iris Apfel
Iris Apfel is a true fashion icon — an irreverent original with a penchant for bold clothes and even bolder accessories. We love everything about the 89-year-old’s style, right down to her larger-than-life signature specs.
Iris worked at Women’s Wear Daily and in interior design before starting a textile company with her husband Carl. The company, Old World Weavers, was responsible for restoring White House decor for nine presidents. Iris became a society figure, known as much for her style as for her work with Carl. In 2005, the Costume Institute put together an exhibition of her collection entitled “Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection” that went on view at the Met. The show was a smash (even Karl went to see it), and highlighted how she mixed high and low to achieve an utterly unique look.
We found a video from the exhibit, which was on display at Boston’s Peabody Essex Museum this past winter. In it she gives us these words to live by: “The point of getting dressed is it’s a creative experience… Freedom of expression, of expressing yourself, is the most important thing.” Amen, Iris. Watch below, and check out our slideshow of some of her greatest looks.
