PHOTOS: Offensive Runway Show Features Models With Guns And Gas Masks

There is shock value, and then there is Philipp Plein‘s fall 2013 men’s collection, which just walked in Milan yesterday. The focus was decidedly less on the leather jackets and slim trousers, and more on the accessories — gas masks, ski masks, and machine guns.

Plein’s collection was very obviously inspired by the military. There was a camouflage helicopter parked at the start of the runway and burlap sacks lining the “trenches”. Some of the male models wore superhero tees, dog tags, and gas or ski masks, and were armed with black or camo colored guns. Several even got carried away with their accessories, pointing their guns in the air and at the photographers. The photos are unsettling, and pretty much speak for themselves.

The guns and gas masks obviously won’t be produced for sale, but given the current events, they beg the question: why? The overall collection could be viewed as social commentary, what with the tragic Newtown shooting and subsequent conversation on domestic gun control laws. But this feels more like Plein’s usual attention-grabbing schtick, as he’s had a history of enlisting C-listers like Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, and Ed Westwick in campaigns and runway shows.

    If he shows it, it doesn’t mean he approves the violence – looks like he’s not apathetic to that. Isn’t this just a reflection of a huge social issue in his creation work?

    So an artist reflects and draws from the violent society we live in, and it’s the art that’s somehow offensive?

    it was very american of him… think of every action figure you give your 5 year old boy or the video games he plays or the action movies we watch…. they all have weapons and war. It’s our american norm and frankly a part of life. Stop being so sensitive and see what’s real.
