Don’t Bend It Like Beckham; Posh’s Purse-Posture Causes Problems
It’s time to rethink your next Victoria Beckham-inspired ensemble and self-diagnose. The Spice Girl-cum-fashion designer has been the cause of widespread epidemic: Poshitis.
The ailment, which was coined by concerned medics, is the result of Beckham inspiring women to wear their large, filled-to-the-brim bags at the crux of the elbow. According to the experts, this toting phenomenon tears muscles and inflames shoulder tendons. It would appear that the Hermès Birkin comes at a price even beyond its $10,000+ tag.
“Women may think they are following a catwalk trend but they are storing up trouble,” physical therapist Sammy Margos told the Express. “We have seen a huge increase in shoulder and neck problems and killer heels can add to the pressure on posture. We have seen handbags which weighed a huge 1½ stone [21 pounds]. It can cause repetitive strain injury and pain in the shoulder and neck.”
To make matters worse for Beckham, may of the devastatingly chic handbags from her eponymous line are just the oversized styles that doctors fear most. And we get why, they practically beg to rest on the elbow’s perfectly curved crook.
While we don’t blame Beckham directly for Poshitis (we’re fools for her) , it’s reports like these that make us take a step back and reflect on our sartorial sacrifices. But then we look at 91-year-old Iris Apfel, someone who has surely sacrificed a ligament or two for the sake of style, and shamelessly return to our bone-reconfiguring Manolo Blahniks.
