Princess Diana Cross-Dressed For A Night On The Town
As her daughter-in-law can certainly attest to, Princess Diana had a difficult time maintaining any sense of anonymity once she married into the royal family — with notoriously tragic consequences. But an anecdote from a new book by friend Cleo Rocos says that on at least one occasion, Lady Di resorted to cross-dressing measures in order to sneak in to a South London gay bar unnoticed by the paps.
Aided by famous pals — Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and TV personality Kenny Everett — Diana allegedly spent a footloose twenty minutes unrecognizable in a particularly rowdy establishment, wearing a biker hat, a camouflage jacket, and a pair of aviators. Definitely a far cry from her usual haute couture getups.
“Our hearts pounded with every new leather-clad hairy body that approached,” writes Rocos. “But no one, absolutely no one, recognized Diana.” Pure poetry. But we doubt the Queen would have approved.
