Scandalous ‘Not To Be Published’ Pic Of Princess Diana Set For Sale

A never-before-seen photograph of the late Princess Diana is up for auction. But it’s hardly your average picture.

In the black and white image (below), Di is laying across an unidentified man’s lap, while a bottle of Johnnie Walker sits on a windowsill close by. The words “Not To Be Published” are written and circled on the photo. According to The Daily Mail, the picture could have possibly been taken on a ski holiday in Switzerland around 1980, which means Diana would’ve been 19.

On the back, the photo is marked “26 February 1981″, presumably the day that Eric Caren of Caren Archive, the largest privately owned newspaper collection in America, bought it from the UK’s Daily Mirror. The date is also significant because it was only two days prior that Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Diana and Prince Charles, which likely explains the mysterious publishing message. That mystery man, however, has yet to be identified, and the Daily Mail is asking for a call if you happen to know who he is.

Caren told the paper:

“It’s an intimate photo – I don’t know the man in the picture and he could be a friend or a boyfriend. This would certainly not be the way the Royal Family would have wanted Diana to be presented at that moment, given that two days before her engagement had been announced. The fairytale between her and Charles was still intact at that point. My guess is that it was a privately taken photograph that the Mirror purchased but for some reason did not publish. Why the heck not I don’t know – I don’t know if it was pressure from the Royal family or an internal decision”.

Carven Archive is now putting the 8×10 photo up for auction later this month through New Hampshire-based RR Auctions, and it is expected to sell for more than £750, or around $1,000 despite the “Not To Be Published” message.
