Did A Project Runway Contestant Rip Off Lululemon?

Michael Costello isn’t the only Project Runway contestant being accused of cheating in last week’s activewear competition. Winner Andy South‘s designs made it into Heidi Klum’s New Balance line, but one piece has been conspicuously altered.

The hoodie that South designed on the show bears a striking resemblance to one put out by Lululemon. We can’t decide if the similarity was intentional or coincidental, but New Balance changed the final design.

What do you think? Did Andy cheat?

I’m gonna give Andy the benefit fo the doubt. My guess is that Andy had never heard of Lululemon.

These sweatshirt styles are nothing alike. The only similarity is the Omega, but isn’t Omega used universally as a general yoga symbol?! I really wanted to buy the sweatshirt when I saw it on the show, but now it’s not nearly as cute without the Omega on the front. (The sunbeams now on the front make it look cheaper, too.)

I was very surprised none of the judges or other contestants were aware enough to notice the major Lululemon ripoff.

I think Andy saw the design before around town, and made the design himself without realizing it.

Here is a video showing the type of influence I think got into Andy’s subconscious. Because to blatantly recreate it as he did would have just been stupid if he knew what he was doing. It is a fascinating video and very worth watching.

No K – the Omega is NOT a universal symbol of yoga. never has been. the only relation to yoga it has is the similarity of lululemon’s logo and the fact that lulu is yoga clothes.

YES those hoodies look exactly alike, its scary. there are many other lulu jackets that have the exact same design. and Shame on those judges/fashion experts – lululemon is one of the most popular athletic apparel lines out there.

actually, rokchic666, while omega is not the universal symbol for yoga (there is no universal symbol for yoga, not even ‘om’ despite popular belief) it is a largely spiritual symbol and is often used in conjunction with yoga branding. I’m sure you are familiar with the phrase “alpha and omega” meaning “the beginning and the end” (alpha being the first letter of the Greek alphabet and omega being the last) largely associated with God or which ever universal creator you subscribe to. There are lots of “Omega” yoga studios. There is even and Omega Center for Sustainable Living with several campuses that host yoga teacher trainings, workshops and such.

Ironically enough, the lululemon symbol is not an omega at all. It is a stylized ‘A’ from the brands original name, Athletically Hip. In a test market they realized that customers enjoyed the brands symbol but not the company name so they kept what worked and scratched what didn’t. The company’s owner, Chip, had a previous clothing company called homeless that he sold to Japanese investors. At the time, western influence was very popular in Japan and the ‘L’ in Homeless made the brand markedly western since there is no ‘L’ sound in the Japanese language. When Chip was brainstorming for another company name he wanted something with a lot of ‘L’s’ in it because of his previous success with the letters. Mix in a few other marketing strategies and you now have lululemon athletica.

That all being said, the hoodies are similar but the style lines are just mimicking and accentuating the natural curvature of a woman’s body. To say that lululemon is the only company who can use that technique would be silly.

The hoodie design is not the issue; the problem is the use of a registered Lululemon logo. I’m sure it wasn’t on purpose, but they would have been foolish to produce the design as is. Every single LLL jacket has this pattern imbedded in it, with or without colour contrasts. All the tops and pants also have a mini reflective logo on them.

I can’t believe how ridiculous we have become as a society. I would never have known that those simple lines were OWNED by some company. Who cares? Why do we concern ourselves with this trash, when there is so much going on in the world. How about we concern ourselves with real problems.
What a sad state of affairs.
