Project Runway: ‘Pregnant Witch’ Look Fails To Impress
Some people listened, and others, like April, made another tough black dress and got eliminated before the final four.
Michael Costello chose the Statue of Liberty, and began his construction by literally making a black version of the Statue of Liberty. Thankfully for his chances of going to Fashion Week, those plans were scrapped, and he ended up with a “showstopper.” Gretchen, on the other hand, went to the Lower East Side, announced that she didn’t “want to do something that’s literal” and made a skirt and jacket version of what she usually does. She ended up safe, but barely.
In the end, Mondo and Michael had the best looks and Andy moved on as well, while 21-year-old April was sent home. Before the designers were informed of the decision, they each got a chance to pick two other contestants to join them at Fashion Week. The final vote tally went: Mondo – 4 (everyone picked him), April – 3, Andy, Gretchen and Michael – 1. It was a big fall for Gretchen, who won the first two challenges of the season and couldn’t sustain it until the end. Even as she barely moved on, she kept that season-long humility. “I’m just really relieved they gave me the second chances each of you guys got,” she said after the runway.
Looking back to the beginning of the season, Michael was in my initial final four selection, and Mondo was a replacement in week four. By this logic, I’m pulling for Michael to surprise his fellow contestants and take the win.
Quote of the Week: “Ladies, this not a hobby. I’m just gonna say that now.” – Andy
Quote of the Week (that made me laugh): “I gave birth to a Chinese prostitute. And that’s really making me nervous.” – Andy again, describing his dress.
Quote of the Week (by Tim Gunn): “Be careful that it not go slutty, and that she not look like the Real Housewives of New Jersey.” (describing Andy’s dress — and a rare reference to former home, Bravo.)
Insult of the Week: “You have made a version of this garment so many times I can’t count. There’s never any joy in your clothes. She’s a pregnant witch.” – Michael Kors on April.
Fashion Term I Had to Look Up: Instead of this, we’ll change it to “Fashion Term Michael Costello Has To Look Up.” Kors asks him what material his dress is, chiffon or jersey. “I don’t know what it is,” he said.
Even I Knew This was a Bad Sign: Describing Gretchen’s dress, Kors says it’s not downtown, not uptown, but instead “looks midtown.” I’m not exactly sure what that means, but it doesn’t sounds anywhere near a compliment.
