Project Runway Recap: Mondo, Always The Bridesmaid…

Someone get Mondo a win. The sixth episode of Project Runway once again saw the Colorado designer finishing with the second-best dressed, while Michael Costello shocked his fellow contestants and collected win #2.

The models made the challenge that much harder: bridesmaids… and their bridemaids dresses.

We start where we left off last week, with Gretchen burned by Tim Gunn (!) for her tyrannical reign over her team last week. She says he hurt her feelings, and it “clouds [her] vision a little bit.”

The tough runway challenge includes not just ugly bridesmaid dresses, but the bridesmaids as models. Michael Drummond picks last, gets a plus-size model, and spends the entire episode complaining about it without really saying what he’s thinking. Example: “I didn’t have any fabric, and I was like, there’s no way I’m tackling all of this size… I’m trying to be very kind.”

At a pre-runway public showcase, each guest votes for one dress, which factors into the judging. Mondo wins that, too. But still, no overall win. Instead, that goes to Costello, who everyone hates. Andy: “So far he hasn’t shown me anything that’s worth respecting.”

Meanwhile, we said goodbye to Peach this week, who knew she was leaving by around the 30-minute mark of the episode. Just 10 designers left… and the Fashion Week spoilers begin next week.

Quote of the Week: “It’s frustrating because craftsmanship isn’t as acknowledged as I’d hoped it would be in the judging.” – Gretchen, who didn’t complain when she won the first two episodes and who is the worst.

Quote of the Week (that made me laugh): “I’m shitting my pants because these dresses are hideous.” – Andy

Quote of the Week (by Tim Gunn): “This is looking about as far away from fashion as one can get. It’s looking more like clothes.” (of Valerie.)

Insult of the Week: “I think her hair looks gorgeous. That’s about all that I think looks gorgeous.” – Michael Kors on Peach’s dress. Runner-up: “It just looks weird and old.” – Nina Garcia… on Peach’s dress.

Fashion Term I Had to Look Up: Holly Hobby Halter Context: Another insult thrown by Kors at Peach’s dress. See one here.

Even I Knew This was a Bad Sign: More Peach, who realized just before going to the runway she “cut the front as the back and the back as the front.”
