Quvenzhané Wallis Really, Really Hopes She Can Wear Pants For Annie

If you’ve seen Beasts of the Southern Wild, the movie for which 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, you’ll know that her character, Hushpuppy, doesn’t exactly have the most diverse of wardrobes. She pretty much wears dirty white tank tops paired with orange undies and rain boots, ratty t-shirts that stretch down to her knees, and the occasional pair of baggy denim shorts.
Meanwhile, as we all know by now, Wallis is a clotheshorse after our own hearts. She sported a “sparkly and fluffy” Giorgio Armani kids gown to Sunday’s big ceremony, calls her collection of puppy purses her “signature”, and can rock purple sequins with the best of them.
So how did she feel about having to ditch her girly attire for the whole course of filming her breakthrough film, which she actually shot at age 5? Well, she visited the set of Chelsea Lately last night and told her host that, indeed, she wasn’t such a fan of the costuming. She was relieved when she found out she could wear her own undies on set underneath Hushpuppy’s orange pair, and said, “I would also prefer her wearing more pants, so that’s why in a few scenes you probably see her wearing shorts.”
But will she get her way and have some pants to put on for her next project, the lead role in a remake of the musical Annie? Wallis hopes so, although we think she’d look just as cute as a button in Annie’s iconic red dress.
